Person called claiming we had an infected pc and began walking my 71 year old mother through supposed trouble shooting steps. The technician had her typing things in and I believe took her to a website that either tried to infect her machine or was some sort of dummy screen to make it appear infected. He then asked her to pay $100 to fix the problem. When she said she would have me look at it he lowered the price to $50. I called the number back and was put into a call queue that wasn't answered and eventually got voicemail where they asked us to leave a name and number to get a call back. Very weird.

I was called by these same people. The man calling identified himself as Charles Grey(or Gray) and gave me this 800 number. He also provided his employee id as CO538.
He went through some steps with me to open up and see my computer logs.  I pretended to be a novice although I am the Information Security Officer at my job.
He obtained my information through the internet and gave it to me over the phone although he had an old address.(Kinda scary).

He told me that  either I could go through the steps with him or hang up. It was up to me so I went along with his game until he had me open the event viewer from the command line to see my logs.  
He asked me to give him information but I got gamey with him.  He asked if I was kidding and I told him "yes" and he yelled out "You son of a .....".  I burst out laughing and he yelled obscenities and hung up.
I then called back a couple of minutes later and asked to speak to Charles Gray but I called from a trunk line whose number was masked so as not to give out any information.  Someone else answered and I demanded to speak to Charles Gray but the man said he was busy and asked if he could help me but I refused and told him "I must speak to Charles Gray" so Charles got on the line and he was very sheepish
with me as he knoew who I was. I asked him if his name was Charles Gray and he told me no and I asked if there was a Charles Gray that worked there and he said no so I hung up.
I have not contacted the FBI but I will since the man was definitely a hacker and con.

These people are hackers and con artists and attempted to obtain my computer information fraudulently.

The first time they called me I thought they were ligit until they wanted me to allow them access to my computer online.  That's when I hung up on them. These people call me at least once a month.  I always tell them they are frauds and hackers then I hang up on them.

I was called from a person that called himself Mathew. He wanted me to turn on my PC, but not to log on to the Internet. He wanted to check my PC for unwanted files that were not viruses so my antivirus program wouldn't catch them. but they could slow down my computer. I was suspicious because I was being pushed to turn on but not to log on. When I pursued the issue I was told he was in SE Asia, but they had a New York office. He gave me a Web address of www.onlinepcwizards.com. The telephone number I was given was: 1-800-986-6540. I was suspicious enough that I terminated the call.

Usually the ones with an Indian accent call from South Asia unless the freaks are hiding in South East Asia working with the locals in a boiler room that sends out various crap. Fake tech support is just a part of it. The lamers use other tricks also.

My mother just got a call from the "onlinewizard tech support" just a few minutes ago with the guy telling her to enter different things on her computer.  She got a virus protection thing that popped up and told the guy she wasn't entering anything else.  She hung up on him thank goodness.  She doesn't do banking and stuff on her computer so hopefully there was not big risk.

Basically same background as other posters.  Got the call on 8 January. As he walked me through his spiel I had disconnected my computer from the Internet.  Finally got as far as him given me the following web address www.ammyy.com, that's when I hung up. Unfortunately, being concerned that my security protection provided in part by Norton was corrupted I made the mistake of contacting Norton's customer support. I did give the Norton technician access to my computer.  Long story short first technician screwed up my Windows 8 files (most likely no malice intended)(the supervisor I talked to readily admitted the technician had been the cause of the problem). Regardless, after 6 hours spent with 5 different Norton technicians and finally the above mentioned supervisor, Norton's final response was yes we screwed up your system by accessing Window files that were beyond our expertise but we can't fix our mistake so were sorry but good-bye.  I then contacted the computer manufacturer who said the only solution was to wipe out the entire system and reinstall Windows 8.  Which I did and then spent the next 5 hours setting up my computer and loading other programs that were wiped out in the process.  Needless to say we lost all of our saved documents and pictures. The really ironic part of this whole frustrating experience was when contacted both Microsoft and the computer manufacturer were aware of this scam. Yet Norton seemingly was not(computer security experts??) and had they simply said don't worry it's a scam all would have been fine.

Add me to the list...I received a call from a man calling himself Francis Hope (I laughed out loud) with a very heavy Indian accent, stating that Windows has contracted with his employer, PCWizards to alert me of a problem in my Operating System.  He claimed antivirus software would not catch this.  Since I suspected a scam, I pretended to play along for a bit.  I told him by computer was out for a repair and then kept him on the phone just long enough to make him sweat out his name and two numbers (800-986-6540 and 870-878-2302), and his website "www.onlinepcwizard.com, so I could presumably call him back.  He gave me the info for running "eventvwr" and certain steps to view the info

Windows does have info about this tool in the HELP section, so you can check your system yourself.  Not being tech savvy, I'm not sure what to do with the info at this point, but will check with a trusted expert, before taking any action.

First, it is a SCAM!  Microsoft does not ever contact users nor do they contract with tech support companies to call users about computer problems. (Note the caller said "Windows" had contacted them which is a huge tip-off since there is no company called "Windows" to call them.  See this link:

Second, those errors in eventvwr are all normal and indicate such things as a miss typed password, failure to connect to the Internet, etc.  They do not indicate anything is wrong with your computer or that it is about to crash.

Third, the only errors Windows sends to Microsoft are those that you allow it to send after a program had terminated abnormally generates the popup window and asks if you want to send the error report to Microsoft. Microsoft only uses those reports to correct errors in Windows and drivers.

Finally,  unless you actually provided contact information to Microsoft, there is no way for them to identify you based upon the above reports and your Windows license string.  Activation of Microsoft software does not require to to provide contact information unless you wish to.
