Just rec'd call from someone called Brandon who said he was from "Windows Service Center" saying my computer had a problem which could cause it to crash without warning. I am suspicious about the validity of this call. He asked me to depress the windows flag on the lower left corner of the keyboard, and simultanously hold down the letter R. I terminated the call.
Is this a legitimate call??? Would Microsoft make a call like this???

Scammers wanted me to change my operating system settings, claimed to be from "Windows Operating System support technical services. Claimed that If I called back this number 1-801-512-0605 it would PROVE it was a legitimate call.  He asked me if I had proof he claimed he was from Microsoft, and  I repeatedly asked him if he was from Microsoft, he answered that Microsoft  made my computer, (False) (He had a Pakistan accent) This is the fourth time I have received this call, and the fourth time they have hung up when I challenged them.

Same thing here. When I asked him which computer he answered "he Windows one." I said that narrowed it down to three, which one, he said "all of them." I think asked what errors and codes he's been "receiving" and he just got evasive. I started laughing at him and yerminated the call.

I received a call from #801-512-0605 said I had errors and infection  in my pc and wanted to have a tech  connect to my pc to fix the trouble. Thinking this is a scam I said I would call back later. Question 1) does windows call with such troubles and 2) is this a real call or a scam of some sort.If this is a real windows service they should have a better way of proving they are real.

I received an identical call tonight.  When repeatedly asking the caller why he was calling me, what made him think I needed his help, etc., all he would respond was that he was from the Windows Service center.  I hung up on him.  Googled the phone number he gave me and came across this information.

I received the same phone call as those of you posting on this site.  I felt a bit leary when he asked me to sit in front of my computer and he would work through the problems with me.  When asked what the errors he was referring to were, he could not  tell me.  I stated that I would call back when I had a chance to actually sit in front of my computer, with the full intent of calling my technical support team immediately after this call.  I did check with my tech support team and they stated to not call them back it sounded like a scam and googled the phone number provided.  I actually called the phone number back several times and everytime they had a foreign accent with American sounding names.  This was all on Tuesday, I attempted to call back on Wednesday to verify the phone number again and could not get through to anyone.  Sounds like a scam to me and I contacted my local law enforcement to advise of the calls.  I am not the only one in my small community that has been contacted.

Same calls as above.  The initial call came in at 10:48 pm est.  The caller initiated call with "good afternoon".  When challanged as to their location they replied Salt Lake City, Utah.  We asked if that was in India as they obviously didn't realize it was almost morning where we live.

Received the very same call last night.  They are trying to gain Remote access to your computer.  They say they are going to scan it for malicious programs that have been missed and unknowingly installed on my unit.  I refused to give them the access they were hoping for because I had no way to verify that they were in fact from MS (other than their words).

This is a scam to gain entry into your computer so that they can steal information!  DON'T DO IT!!!

I got the same call yesterday from a 999 #.  A guy with a strong accent was also named "Brandon".  I was in my car at the time, having forwarded my home phone to my cell.  I played along a bit and told him I would have to call him back.  It was then that he gave me 801-512-0605 as his number and told me to call him back before 1-1/2 hours, because he got off work then and would head for home from I asked him what time it was in Salt Lake (in order to set a time to call him back of the 801-512-0605 number).  He stammered a bit and was obviously trying to figure out what time it would be in SLC, finally coming up with a time that happened to be 2 hours ahead of the time on the west coast, where I live.  Unfortunately for him, SLC is in Mt. time, not Central, so the time would have been only 1 hour ahead of my time, not 2.  Later I looked up the 801 number he gave me and the reverse directory told me that it was a cell phone.  I highly doubt Microsoft gives their customer service reps cell phone to use in the office. The best way to deal with these folks (if you are concerned that the call could be legit) would be to call MS headquarters in talk to a CS rep. Another hint would be that if there was a threat, MS would give their customers a toll free number to call back, not expect the customer to pay for the cost of the call.  Spread the word about this scam.

Got a call from guy with Indian accent, reading a script.  Told me my computer had been sending them (microsoft) messages, and that it was badly infected.  If I didn't fix problem, it could crash at any time.
Was selling some kind of software protection package and 'cleaning' process.  $ 175. for one year, a lot more for extended periods.

When I told him I had to think about it, he was very disappointed and renewed efforts to get me to agree to buy the protection right away.

Repeatedly said he was from Microsoft Windows, gave me this phone # when I said I would need to call him back.

This must be a scam. Can't believe that microsoft would be so aggressive and persistent to sell you something like this...

I just received similar call. He was very rude. When I said I need to check about his company, he started asking about my age. He said I must be 25-26 because I am stubborn and don't understand how serious the problem is. When I refused to purchase his product, he started laughing and said "Congratulations! you made a smart decision."."

Just got a called from "Edward Spencer" who spoke with such a heavy Indian accent that I could only understand half of what he was telling me.  The caller ID was 999-910-0219.  When I questioned him, he gave me a call back number of 801-512-0605.  He told me my Window operating system is infected.  When I tried to ask him more questions, he could not answer coherently.  I have a Mac so I do not have Windows.

This is a bogus call.  Checked into Microsoft website for more information.

Calls from the number 801-512-0605 are high pressure sales call from a company called PCefix.  They initially misrepresent themselves as calling to help you with a Windows operating system error.   When you pressure them for more details as to where they are calling from and who they are, they will eventually give you this number to call back on.

This number is listed as a Salt Lake City phone number, but those calling are from overseas and you can hardly understand them.  If you get a call from this number hang up or just play along and use up their time, but don't allow them access to your system and don't bother to try to buy any services from them.
