- gary| 3 repliesTypical annoying robo-call from those good-for-nothing "IRS" scammers. This time (most likely to hide their Indian or Russian accents) they used a text-to-speech "female" voice. The voice reported that she is "Officer Sarah Williams," and that the IRS is bringing criminal charges against me, and needs me or my lawyer to call them back immediately, as the issue is "extremely time-sensitive." Yeah, right...
- Caller: Yet another "IRS" scam...

I need you or your retained attorney of records to return the call the issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My phone number is 800 for 212344 do not disregard this message and do return the call now if you don't return the call, and I don't hear from your attorney either then the only thing I can do is wish you a good luck as the situation totally unfolds on you. Goodbye." - Alfalfa replies to Gary| 1 replyThere are numerous telephone and email scams in which individuals claim to be employees of the Treasury Department. These scammers often state that they are from the “Department of Legal Affairs,” offer grant money in exchange for you wiring a small payment, or threaten to arrest you within a short period of time unless payment is made. Do not provide personal information or payment to these individuals. Their actions are crimes under Titles 18 and 31 of the United States Code, and the Treasury Office of Inspector General is working to stop them.
If they claim to be from Treasury, report it to OIGCounsel@oig.treas.gov with a description. If it was a phone contact, include:
the exact date and time that you received the call(s)
the phone number of the caller
the geographic location and time zone where you received the call
a description of the communication.
If they claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or it is about taxes, report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at:

- CWG40 replies to AggravatedYou do understand that the IRS has no powers of arrest as to ordinary tax disputes. You do understand that only a judge can issue warrants. You do understand that IRS has no power to issue warrants. You do understand that no one in the US is proscuted for ordinary tax disputes. If you didn't know these things, you know them now. And yes, you can hang up your phone. There is nothing believable about these kinds of calls. Nothing. This scam's been all over hte media. How could you miss it?

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes. Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
