Five calls today at 90 minute intervals. Same message left each time, IRS had a certified letter returned and I must call to pay the outstanding tax debt.  This number has been calling three times a week for the last several weeks. It's obviously a scam.

The guy with an eastern accent left the message and indicated the call was legal even if I had a no call list. He said that the IRS was calling due to illlegal tax activity or non-filling and they the IRS could get a court decision without my knowledge.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Call from 804-608-6654 stating I can be prosecuted without due process. It was an automated message and similar to the scams being conducted last year. I think it's some North Korean, ISASS or ALQuido, or what ever group that is made of bunch of idiots that have nothing better to do than to harass the citizens of USA.
It could be some course at a university over there that teaches how to set up automated calls and how to intimidate people over the phone. Those who graduate get to work for call centers managed by US companies.
We were getting the same calls last year and now they're back just in time before graduation.

Same thing happen to me . Called from my cell. Didn't recognized the number and didn't answer. I reported it. Thanks Alfalfa for putting this information on line here. I think if more people report these kind of things, then these scum bags wouldn't get a way with it. It's to bad there isn't a way to strike back through their phone system to mess their operation up.

These clowns are a joke.  I suggest everyone call them back and harass them.  One of the "IRS" agents said he wanted to
"f..k" my wife.  Very disappointed in our tax dollar usage.  Complete fakes.  They also did not like it when I ordered hot curry.
They really didn't want to talk.

Leaves harassing messages threatening people with law suits filed, actions taken, etc. I sure can deal with this, but my ealderly parents can't - received 5 voice mails of this nature today, Fri 4/24/2015, starting at 8 AM, every hour. DAMN these SCAM.

The Indian thick accent dudes are my favorites! LOL. They try so hard to sound real.

I get SOOOO many of these calls, that when one of these morons call, I get a break and a chance to laugh a little. If I have company ( a beer blast) oh we REALLY rip into them. Oh, REPORT TO FTC! :-)
