    Folks,
The Census Bureau's REAL census taking took place in 2010! If they needed to contact you, me or anyone else afterwards they would have done so most likely not long ater!!!

This is NOT the Census Bureau calling us but another scam artist a**hole most likely after our personal information and quite possibly attempting to steal our identities! Report them for Fraud (claiming to be a govt. agency), harassment, identity theft and anything else along those lines. The FTC and other such agencies should know... including the census bureau itself!!!

    http://www.census.gov/survey_participants/rel ... _web_sites.html

    "# Mail and Phone Scams

       * Contact the Federal trade Commission"

    http://www.privacyrights.org/census-scams-you-can-count-on-it

"# If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the Census, you can verify that the person calling you is a Census Bureau employee by calling 866-226-2864.  Remember that callers can “spoof” their number to make it look like the call is coming from the Census, when it really is not. "

    http://www.identitysupport.com/277-census-bureau-scams-on-the-rise.html

"The Census is done every 10 years. This means in 2010 the next Census will be taken. In the meantime there are many people revving up to use this Census taking to their advantage. However, the advantage for them will be a disadvantage for you."

"Therefore, if you have received anything that is “supposedly” from the Census Bureau, you can be certain that it is not legit. "

"If you happen to get scammer at your door or have one call you over the phone claiming to be from the Census Bureau, you should also know that the Census Bureau doesn’t have any need for your banking information, credit card information or social security number. If you are asked for any of these items, you will definitely know that the person is trying to run a scam"

And, no, I did NOT pick up.  This number and "name" (Census Bureau") were displayed on my caller id though!!!

Further I have blocked (also through call screen) all three of the reported numbers.  Guess what? All three still get through. A spoofed number can do that because the number (spoofed) on caller ID isn't the real number 'calling' and the real one is NOT blocked!!! Notice, also, that all the numbers for Indiana, Maryland and Arizona Regional Centers as well as their National Processing Center DO NOT match any of those we are getting these harassing calls from!!! Fraud! Harassment! Scam! Three Strikes right there!!!!  I'm in California! Were the REAL U.S. Census Bureau e calling me it would be either from the L.A. Regional Center or from their NPC number (812-218-3300 ) ... but NONE of these we are all receiving! And  I lready filled out and returned the long form less than a year ago... had they any trouble with it they would not have waited so long to call for validation or correction on it!!!

The U.S. Census Bureau has "U.S. Census Bureau" on Caller ID!!!

NOT ... U.S. Census, Census Bureau, Census Bur

    http://www.afb.org/seniorsite.asp?SectionID=6 ... 5260&Mode=Print

"The caller ID will likely show "U.S. Census Bureau." If this text is not supported (such as on a cell phone), then the inbound toll-free number should show up."

From another reported number (claiming to be The Census Bureau):
    https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-866-851-2010/11

"If the bureau were to follow-up a mailed in census questionnaire, the phone call would come from the respondent's local census office (which is in your county). In other words, the phone number would be the area code, then the number."

Speaking for myself, I have NOT received any kind of form from the Census Bureau prior to calls from each of these 'numbers' calling me!!! Red Flag right there!!!
I have more than just this (and in all the other posts) here too!!!

If we mailed the form back, should we be worried?! I mailed mine back a couple weeks ago & received the first call today - I didn't answer, but they left a VM with a case # asking me to return the call. I don't plan on returning the call or answering when they call, but now I'm worried about the form I sent to them after reading this...

It's not the U.S. Census Bureau and that form is not the 10 question or long (ACS) form either!

"Complaint:  Caller claims to be with the United States Census Bureau. Believe this is a scam as the Census Bureau does not conduct interviews over the phone."

The only reason the actual census bureau would call would be only in rare instances, and a census worker might call to clarify information you've submitted. The Census Bureau doesn't conduct the census through telephone calls!

    http://charlotte.bbb.org/article/bbb-beware-of-fake-us-census-workers-10136

"For years, the Better Business Bureau has educated consumers about not giving out personal information over the telephone or to anyone who shows up at your front door. As the 2010 U.S. Census process begins, the BBB advises you to cooperate carefully so you do not become the victim of a scam.

    • U.S. Census workers will not ask you for your social security number or your banking and financial information.  Do not ever give your social security number, credit card or banking information to anyone who contacts you, even if they say it is for the Census."

Since the last census was taken back in 2010 if they needed to call and either clrify or see if a correction in something you filled out they would have done so not long after.  The last census was done in March that year and completed by around may 2010. If the long form was involved it would have been a year later (1 year version) and not by the beginning of this year ... too soon! THis is a scam from this and the 3 other numbers reported as being from the census bureau! If it were actually the census bureau or their national processing center calling it would ave your area code followed by the first three local prefx numbers then four others or it would actually have the npc number in Indiana which happens to be (812) 218-3300 NOT  any of the numbers we're seeing claiming to be the Census Bureau!!!
As to the actual Regional Call Centers - Maryland (In Philadelphia): (215) 717-1800 or 1-800-262-4236 NOT 240-420-6069, Arizona (In Denver): (303) 264-0202 or 1-800-852-6159 NOT 520-798-4152 and for Indiana (In Illinois): (630) 288-9200 or 1-800-865-6384 NOT 812-218-3144.

So, Jessica ... yes, you have a reason to worry! Report each call but not just on the NDNCR site either ... FTC, FCC, IC3.gove and your State Atty General and any other appropriate agency! These are scammers out to get our personal info .... far from the U.S. Census Bureau!!!

I received a call today from this number 812-218-3144. Showed up on caller ID as "Census Bureau". A woman left a message saying it was the "State Census Bureau" and gave a toll-free number 888-817-2153 to return the call along with a case ID number. I knew right off it was a fraud. First of all, there's no such entity as the "State Census Bureau." Secondly, the 2010 U.S. Census is long over and all the stats have been compiled. Folks, this is a fraud pure and simple. Don't be taken in by it.

After further research I've come to the conclusion that this is a legit U.S. Census Bureau number. It is part of the American Community Survey that they do. The survey is conducted even in years other than a normal census year. Just more Big Brother courtesy of Uncle Sam but it's legit nonetheless.

Okay, I called the 888-817-2153 number back and it is a legitimate census bureau number. They had mistakenly associated my phone number with a similar address in a town a few miles from me. I've actually had this problem before with UPS deliveries since both towns have streets with the same name in the same county. I live in a small town that doesn't have residential mail delivery. I have to pick my mail up at the post office. So whenever someone uses the USPS address database to verify my address they always end up with the address in the other town. Anyway, to make a long story short, the census bureau was doing a follow-up on a survey form they sent to the other town address and hadn't received back, but somehow associated my phone number with the other address. They were courteous, thanked me for clearing it up, and said I shouldn't be hearing from them anymore.

I just got a call from this so-called Census Bureau. They left a message on my answering machine to call them back with a case number, I was suspicious, so I Googled it. Funny, if they are a Government agency, why are they calling on a Saturday? I too, will block them.

I called the US Census Bureau (got the number from their website) and spoke to a very unpleasant woman who says that this invasive survey I received in the mail is legitimate and that I am legally required to respond.  The equally unpleasant woman who called me last week basically threatened me and said that the "phone calls will just keep coming" until I cooperate and answer all of these invasive, personal questions.  STOP CALLING ME!  It's none of your business how much money I make, how many rooms are in my house, how many vehicles I own, what I do for a living, etc, etc, etc!
