- Barbara YatesWow, so this is fraud. I also have received numerous calls but I know that the Census Bureau does not have the money to be calling people and this is not an 800 #. I also filled out a form that looked totally legit. Will scammers never stop! Okay, now I know, I will totally ignore this number and even block it if I can. Someone needs to go after these crooks then!

- SevI got a call from 218-3144 (no area code) Census Bureau. A woman with pleasant voice introduced herself as Census Bureau employee and start asking questions. And when questions become more privet I just hung up. Because if it is even a legitimate thing, they have no right to ask such a questions... You just ignore this kind of things.
If it is the Census, then It can't be mandatory.- Caller: Census Bureau
- NOT replies to Federal EmployeeTOO DAMN BAD!!!! NOBODY SHOULD BE CALLED AND HARASSED TO GIVE UP PERSONAL INFO!!!
- AnnaHThis is a scam, do not give any info. I love how the scammers themselves get on here and post OBVIOUS QUOTES that they are legit. NOT!! Call your local Census Bureau!

- BullI have recieved severeal calls from this number with the claim they are the U.S. Census Bureau. There are at least two different females involvevd in this scam. If all of you call the FTC @ 1-877-382-4357 and report this we can make it go away!
- scottI previously posted this was a scam, but now it seems legit. The Census Bureau's long and green "American Community Survey" can be see at:
http://www.census.gov/acs/www/about_the_survey/forms_and_instructions/
This is obviously too long and expensive and non-threatening in its questions to be a fraud, which is why we all thought it was legit when we filled it out, and it is. The person calling me was pleasant and there was nothing odd about the conversation. She verified some of the questions, ones which I had trouble with such as race and ethnicity of my Caucasian/Latino children (the government apparently does not want such children counted in the proper category). The only dollar amounts involved were value of the house, house insurance, and house taxes, which I supplied. The questions about our children seemed a little intrusive, but that is the country we now live in thanks to fear that promotes an ever growing centralized government. (WW2 was the reason income tax for people other than the extremely wealthy began, promoted by donald duck advertisements. Income tax on the rich began with the civil war, despite the unconstitionality of it and the rich trying to legally fight it...supreme court had a 5-4 split decision).- Call type: Survey
- oldae| 1 replyI just got a call from this number at 12:17PM March 30, 2012 claiming to be "Census Bureau" I did not take the call, and subsequently put the number in the Blocked Call feature on my landline phone. I still have the information from The American Community Survey which I filled out and sent back to an Indiana address on March 6th. The only telephone number listed in the survey information pamphlet is 1-800-354-7271.

- SAYLITTLE| 1 replyI received a phone call today, Sunday, April 1st, 2012 at 11:18 a.m. from the phone number 812-218-3144. A professional sounding woman said she was conducting a "Census Bureau" survey and wanted to verify my address. I asked what address do you have? She responded with an address that did not belong to me. I told her "that is not my address". When she found out that was not my address, she said she wouldn't be conducting the survey today, however, someone may call in the future to conduct the survey. I then stated "I have received the census forms awhile back and have filled them out and mailed them back". She said "Oh, you have got the forms?" I said "In the past I have received the forms and have sent them back in, and it sounds like you are contacting the wrong person for whatever address you have". She then asked me to confirm my address. I asked her how do I know who I am talking to? She said "You don't Ma'm, and if you are uncomfortable answering you don't have to". I told her what town I live in (only) and that the address she had for me was incorrect. I asked her if she knew my name and she answered "NO". I told her that I wasn't going to give any other information over the phone.
Be careful what info. you give out!- Caller: Census Bureau

- oldae replies to oldae"Census Bureau" called again today, Sunday, April 1st, and it wasn't an April Fools' joke. I spoke with Ron Godfrey at the 812-218-3144 number. He called because his computer screen did not show all of the information that I had included in the American Community Survey. I asked him where the "hard copy" or paper form was that I had sent in. He said they scan the form into their data base but it does not always capture all the information. They don't type the information in by hand as a rule. They destroy the paper copy of the survey after the data is entered. That's allegedly to keep the paper copy of the information from being physically stolen. I verified where he was calling from (Jeffersonville, Indiana) and that he did already have my correct name and address. To make a long story shorter, this is a valid call, BUT someone may also be spoofing the same phone number and pretending to be the Census Bureau. I referred him to the 13 pages of complaints at 800notes.com (no www, no http://). IF someone calling from this number asks for your Social Security Number, Bank Account Data, or asks for MONEY, it is a scam! They NEVER ask for that data or for money, either on the phone or in forms they send out.
IF you get a cold call claiming to be the Census Bureau, and you have NOT received surveys or other correspondence from the "Census Bureau," be very suspicious. They should not be calling someone to whom they have not previously sent a form or corresponded with via the U. S. Mail. There are several different surveys, and they go on all year, every year. The calls are followup calls concerning particular surveys, usually to clarify information or to complete the form. - oldae replies to SAYLITTLESee my posts above. Seems odd that she didn't know either your name OR address! I asked Ron Godfrey where he was calling from, and he replied, "Jeffersonville, Indiana," which would be correct. I verified the phone number also. He had my correct name and address. He had the correct names for two other people who live here. So he "passed" my tests for authenticity. If they call you again, get the name of the caller and address and verify the phone number. Legitimate Census workers will be happy to comply. Ask specifically what form they are calling about. I mentioned to Ron about this website and the number of complaints or questioning that was going on about these calls. I think that there also are scammers spoofing the Census Bureau phone number. If the person calling ever asks for your Social Security Number, Bank Account information, or asks for money, it is a scammer!

- Mossy TreeThey are calling twice a day. The Constitution requires a census every 10 years. Number of people in your home for redistricting. Anything else is a government overreach. Don't give out any information over the phone.

- KevI've also been getting these calls from 812-218-3144, so today, May 13, 2012, I decided to check the validity of these calls.
I got onto the Census.gov website and found a number to call. It's Sunday, and they're there till 9p. I talked to a person there and she asked for my phone number, and sure enough, she came up with the same case number that the people calling from 812-218-3144 were giving me. She said that these phone surveys are legit and are voluntary. She asked me if I wanted to do the survey and I said no. She said that's fine and will note that on my case number.
