I grew up in the 50's too. I remember we had a party line shared by others in our neighborhood. Many times we'd pick up the phone and someone down the block was on the line. We'd have to wait for them to finish - usually not very long. People had morals back then. (and manners)

If I get a call from somewhere in the country that's not familiar, I don't answer and let it go to voicemail. If they leave no msg I figure it's a telemarketer, so I then put a block on the number. Usually I call back just to make sure, but sometimes not. I'm going to call this # back right now and post back.

Yep. A telemarketer. My iPhone lists this # as from Grapevine, TX. I got a computer who did not give a company name but did say push 5 to be put on their Do Not Call list.
I did that but am also blocking this # as well.

This # is one of several of a private company trying to sell Medicare Insurance. They got a 1-star rating from consumeraffairs.com and are listed as "Unaccredited" with them. Basically it sounds like they just want your money and give you s**t in return. They call people about 5 mos. before you turn 65. The parent company is listed as "Health Net" by Consumer Affairs.

I even found an actual .pdf file the telemarketers use listing Do's and Dont's. In the Dont's they indicate to NEVER say they are with Medicare. That was all I needed.

    BLOCK THEM.

Great idea, but I would quickly change your script. Omit all "Yes" words. They record the conversation with you, that when a person says " Yes" at any time, they can claim you agreed to whatever they are trying to sell you and your verbal "Yes" is recorded as proof of your agreement to a contract with them. You could end up with charges on your phone bill, electric bill, etc.
It is known as "slamming". Perfect example; just a few hours ago, I got a call from unknown number, so I let it go to the answering machine. Usually they will disconnect and/or hang up. This time, a mechanical female voice said, "Hello?" A one second pause, then an actual (female) woman came on the line and said, "Are you there?" That is one of their famous ploys to get you to say "Yes" before you even know who it is or what they want.

Check these articles on slamming, and you can see how they can operate:

Got the call. Didn't answer. Blocked it. I think I have gotten one of these from different places all over the country every day this week. This must be an epidemic. I always block them, never answer, but still they come from somewhere else.

Received two calls from this number today.  My caller ID identified them as "MedBenefits".  Didn't answer; no message left.

Just bought a brand, spankin' new phone last night, so there won't be a third call.  😜
