Message: "Hi. This is Jessica from US Tax Consultants. Today is September 12. I'm following up on the notice that we sent out regarding your back taxes and missed filings for the account linked to [cell phone number]. This may be our only attempt to reach you and its critical that you speak with someone today. Please call us right away at 833-714-4412. We can bring your extensions current, request penalty waivers, and review new release programs that could significantly reduce or even eliminate what you owe. With important deadlines approaching do not make another payment until we have spoken. Again please call 833-714-4412 today."
Many companies operate under the generic title "US Tax Consultants" but few are legitimate. I believe this is a phishing scam for several reasons.
1. I don't owe any back taxes and don't have any missed filings.
2. The message refers to a previous notice that was "sent out" and I never received an other notice by text, mail or voicemail.
3. When they say the cell phone linked to the account the voice changes to a different computer generated voice for the last 4 digits. I believe that Jessica is not a real person but a pre-recorded message done by a nice sounding person and they pre-record the area code and first three number of the cell phone numbers which are standard and can easily be obtained. Then a computer goes through all possible four digit combinations for the last four numbers and when it hits an actual phone number it plugs those last four numbers into the pre-recorded message. That's why if you listed close enough to the voicemail you can tell the last four digits of the cell phone number are a different voice.
4. This is a "high pressure" call, they make it sound "urgent" and want you to panic and call back immediately/today. Scammers use high pressure calls to catch you off guard so you act before you have time to think things through. The message uses phrases like "may be our only attempt to reach you", "its critical that you speak with someone today", "important deadlines approaching", and "Please call us right away". They also put in a little enticing language like "could significantly reduce or even eliminate what you owe", so if you do happen to have any back taxes you want to call.
5. Caller ID did not show any company information and the calling number is different from the call back number. While not showing the company information and having a different call back number could be legitimate, with all of the other message red flags, this is just another thing to be suspicious about.
6. Most legitimate companies for tax relief don't do cold calling. They may advertise but using other methods.- Caller: US Tax Consultants
