- Anonymous| 1 replyI have been receiving the same call for my sister in Tennessee. They use her maiden name and she has never had my current phone number. The message they leave doesn't even give a reference number. I wish these scams would just be done. My family used to receive these same calls for me. Why they never call the right person I don't know.

- Tygerkat replies to AnonymousBecause they're trying to embarrass their victim into paying what is more than likely a non-existent debt.
- BigAThey have the phone number of their intended victim. It is much easier to extort money if you panic the intended victim first by embarrassing them to everyone they know (which in itself is illegal)
Merit Exchange Financial Services. Website says that they are in Georgia which is another major area for criminals pretending to be debt collectors. Website doesn't really say they are a DC though.

They have no BBB page and they are not registered in any state to legally do business.
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- James Johnson replies to JThey say there is a claim against me and I need to press 1 and speak with live person for details. Also leaves me the number at top to call. They are calling from 9125491423. The last call said I had court in Glynn county court house and gave a date. I checked court house and they had shut down all court cases due to Covid. They wanted $525.00 on my debit card. i didn't call back and they got nothing.
- Valley girl 1Got hired by this so called collection company, and quit a week later I’ve worked in collections for a couple years now and nothing about the company collection policy’s were legit I had to contact a lawyer for them withholding my wages earned after I quit, also contacted the BBB I encourage anyone else to do it as well ... it’s a big scam and if a person is not aware of FDPCA rules they will fall victim
