- David A| 9 repliesThis is a scam. They claim to be from the IRS, here's the message the person with a heavy accent left:
"This is John Matthews calling from the Internal Revenue Services [sic] tax auditing department, that is the IRS. We have received a legal petition concerning a financial tax fraud in your name. So before things go out of hand, or before we proceed at the federal claim court house with a warrant for your arrest, I need you or your retained attorney of record to give us a call on 844-204-8529. Again, this is officer John Matthews from the IRS, the number is 844-204-8529."
Oooooh! Scary!! If the IRS is going to arrest you, you will get lots of things in the mail first, not a phone call from the Internal Revenue "Services" in poor english. - Max KaneThese guys called me today at 1:30 Dec. 17, with the same approach.
I called him back three times and harrassed him. Funny the same person answered after only one ring all three times. That never happens in any call center of any kind.
Reported them to the IRS via phishing@irs.com- Caller: Claimed to be IRS
- KellyGJust received a voice message on my home phone claiming to be from the IRS. The first clue that something isn't right is that he doesn't identify by name who the phone call is for. The message I received is identical to the one I just read here on this site by David A.
- markcheryl replies to David AWe got the same voicemail with the exact message!
- DC replies to David AYes, got the same message, same name yesterday. I called back a few times to take them on a gullible ride, but the line is constantly busy. SCAM!
- BEN GCaller claims to be from the IRS?
- Caller: I R S
- NoelI received this scam message at 9:30 AM today,Nov. 19, and nearly lost my breakfast. Fortunately my wife was cooler, and went right to Google. What a relief. Hope they catch the guy who calls himself John Matthews.

- BShowed up on my caller ID as Toll Free Caller, at 11:06 AM today. Since I'm so sick of all these calls, my phone & answering machine is turned off most of the time. I only answer if I know the caller or number.
- Caller: Toll Free Caller
- PamJust received that same call. Try calling back no answer Officer Johnson!!!!
- AKJust got the same call this morning. First telltale sign was a heavy accented man with the name "John Matthews". Yeah, right. Secondly, they never give a name of who they are looking for. Just threaten. I do not believe the IRS calls this way. You get a letter. Not some foreigner pretending to be an american. Get a life, buddy.
- Caller: "IRS"
- Eliza replies to David AI just got the same exact call, sad thing is there are people out there that will believe this crap

If the IRS wants you for something you will get certified mail pertaining to the issue, not a phone call. - sickofthis in calinot sure if it was this same # or not (probably not!) but i got pretty much this same call about a month - 6 weeks ago. only that time his name (i KNOW it was the same voice!) was "officer franklin benjamin." get it? franklin benjamin/benjamin franklin...(which is what he was hoping to get!) obviously not the brightest criminal in the world. in the posts on that # was a list of places to report it with links. i'll try to find it. there's the fcc, and federal & state atty general's. i also posted on the aarp scam site.
- Caller: irs officer john matthews
- sick of this in cali replies to Jfound it! last time the spoofed # was in D.C. apparently this criminal also goes by adam jones
with respect to the original poster, i am pasting an edited version of his response because it was specific to the issue:

Confirmed fraud attempt (IRS script). This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email: - BrianJust got the same exact scam message from John the scammer Matthews
- Beto replies to David AYup, we got exactly the same message, word-for-word.
- ANGRY replies to David AI GOT THE SAME MESSAGE and when you call them back and tell them they are a scam and that they have no right and Tha I am turning them into BB they hang up and now wont answer
