They've called me and my boyfriend so far. They won't leave a message as to what it's regarding.  When I answered the phone she asked for me by my MARRIED name (I'm divorced now) and answered the phone "Legal".  When I said that's not my name anymore she told me that she could ONLY speak with the person with my married name.... I said ok well I tried to call you back to find out what this is regarding but good luck finding that person and hung up..... I still have NO CLUE who this is?

Receiveing calls at my home number and cell number, they say they are from the legal department and want to discuss pending litigation from an unpaid loan from 2011. Bank loan from Midland bank was orginally for $450 and now over $2800 including attorney fees and court cost.  They had my SS, email, an employer, a home address and some bank information.  Unfortutnately the information they had was correct but seriously off in the timing of when the information was correct. I requested information on the loan and was told they are not required to show proof of the debt since they had all the information on me and they would proceed with litigation, I again requested informaiton on the loan and they hung up. Be very careful if they cal you!!

I also received and missed a call from this number. Yesterday, it was another 844 number. I look it up, and it is under the same type of information as I find here. I just blocked it. I will do the same with this number. Thanks for sharing!

They have my SS number but all other information they have on me is from four years ago. They found me by not calling me but calling sister who lives out of state. I call them and they say I owe $400 from payday loan company from 2011. I'm told if I don't pay it in full this will go to court. I say I don't recall this loan can you send me whatever information you have proving I owe this money. A woman says you've already been emailed a bill. I tell the woman I didn't receive it can you send it again. The woman then says yes and hangs up on me. After all this I still didn't receive any kind of email from them.

I got the same call but mine was about a payday loan from 2011. Had  my banking and SS but email wrong and he didn't know my address. Told he was not permiited to send me info. The payday loan was for 350 and according to this guy if I pay 2000.00 now they won't sue. I told him I would wait for the papers from the attorney and get back to them. These people if you can call them that are pathetic.

I returned a call to this number after they called mine and my husbands families. Never once did they call me or my husband. That probably should have been the first red flag. Like a dummy trying to make sure I had no more bad marks on my credit I fail for this. I will be canceling my bank acct and getting a new debit card. I never once asked why they didn't call me. I didn't ask for the company name. She had my social security number. I assumed it was legit. She told me I had a $400 payday loan that never got relayed from 2011. When they attempted to debt my bank acct it didn't go through. I told her I wasn't sure what she was talking about. I have had a payday loan before by I couldn't tell you if it was in 2011. I just knew I paid it back. I kept asking her for info on the payday loan but she said she didn't have that all she is is the company that last tried to collect in it which is SJM services or something like that. She said I had 2 options. 1- pay over $2000 in attorney fees and stuff because I would be sued if I didn't get it taken care of. Or 2 I could take care of it but she would have to call the company to see what amount they would settle on because it was now at $890. Of course I want to settle. So she called the company and put me on hold. That should have been a flag. When she got back on the line she had 2 options for me. 1 I could settle for $623 right now or 2 I could make 6 installment payments biweekly to settle the $890. She asked about the last 4 digits of checking acct number and routing number. Didn't give me the whole acct number. I verified that try were correct. Have her my correct address.!then like a dummy gave her my debit card number to take the first payment out on Friday. She said I would receive and email that I had to accept before the first payment is scheduled to come out. I still haven't received that. I guess today I will be calling my bank and changing my info. Thankfully I already have a fraud alert on my credit report so she can't open any accts with that. I have already had some get all my info and try to steal a credit card. After I figure out who to report this too and what steps they want me to take I will be calling the number back.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Thank you so much! I felt off about this and should followed my instinct while on the phone but I felt rushed and now I just feel like a big dummy. I will be calling that number as soon as I get my kids off to school. I already have a fraud alert on my account but will let them know what's going on and I will be calling my bank today to cancel debit card and get a new checking account number. I was stupid enough to verify my Ss#, bank acct #, new address and let them know I don't work for the employer that had on file which should have been a red flag since I didn't work for that employer in 2011. I lived in a different state at that time. I didn't live at the address they had in file either. Thanks again for the info.

They use FEAR to FORCE you to take ACTION before you can THINK about it rationally.

Don't feel like a dummy, though.  These scumbags are no different from a mugger who sticks a gun in your face and demands your wallet.  They are CRIMINALS and SOCIOPATHS, and they deserve to be DESTROYED.

NEVER, EVER give out any personal or banking info over the phone.  Your bank won't need you to give them that info, because they already have it.  Anyone who asks you to pay with Western Union or Green Dot or anything like that is a SCAMMER, 100% of the time, without exception.  Best not to answer strange #s in the first place.  That's what voicemail is for.  If they don't leave a message, then screw 'em.

I too have received two calls now and they called my brother.  calls come in either blocked or from 844-250-8715 and you're supposed to call back 844-240-0729.  I did call them and insisted they provide their full company name and address before I spoke to them.  Mumble a company name like Starke? but got very aggressive and wouldn't provide any additional information until I verified who I was...threatened they had my SS# and bank information.  So I contacted my bank and the three credit unions and initiated a 90 day Fraud Alert.  I also pulled my credit report and about 20 days ago a company I never heard of, nor that I approved access to requested my credit report.  I haven't applied for any credit in the past 3 months so this may have been part of the scam.  Although it doesn't answer how they got my brother's info.  Getting ready to report them to the authorities.  If you've been contacted, I highly suggest you call your bank and go to the following website https://www.alerts.equifax.com/AutoFraud_Online/jsp/fraudAlert.jsp and initiate your own Fraud Alerts! (Equifax will contact the other two companies on your behalf.)    I also found this link very helpful!  https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/pdf-0009-taking-charge.pdf  Good luck!
