- Jones| 3 repliesA person called my elderly mother in her 70's and told her that her granddaughter was in trouble for an old Pay Day Loan. The loan had been paid back but they claimed it hadn't been paid and threatened to take her granddaughter to court. They took my mother for $550.00. It appears to be a scam.

- Slim replies to Jones| 1 replyA phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:
* Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]
Source:
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.
IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

Also contact your local attorney general.
If you paid them by credit or debit card go to the bank and see if you can have the transaction reversed for fraud. - CWG40They call themselves ISS Mediation Group which is scam double-talk for debt collector. Creepy-sounding [***] on the line. Using military type acronyms and a clipped way of speaking to describe his "company" and absolutely denying he was a debt collector.

- GETALIFE843This number called my sister's home several times in a week's time and then continue calling me on my cell even at my place of work. They have called us as a law firm, judge, and even law enforcement saying I would be picked up for arrest if I did not pay x amount of dollars before x day. I knew right off it was a scam considering I called the number back from a pay phone and they represented themselves as Green Law Firm. Now it is a week later and they fax something to my job wanting my financial information and proof of employment. I reported them. It is a scam!!! They tell you whatever to scare you.

- MiamiLeslie Clark calle, very rude and coercive stating that I had a case with a case number and if I didn't respond I'd be in some very serious trouble. What authority can I go to to stop this abuse?

- AJWLeslie Clark has called me multiple time with a case number saying it is very important that I call. However, they have a name that isn't mine and I've never met. I've left multiple messages to have them remove me from this person's case. I did get a very polite person who did "look up the case" and and ask to verify my name and number. Which I told him was all well and good, but I still didn't know a Craig Christensen. He said he would remove my name. Guess what. Got another call for Craig Christensen today about his very important case he better call about!

- Laurie76I keep getting calls from this number also but have not answered them. I figured it had to do with a 208 number that I blocked, so they used another number. They said I will go to jail if I don't pay them $2300 by the end of the month. The funny thing is that I have never been through this bank account EVER!!! How do I keep them from calling my cell? Seems like when I block them they use a different one. I am getting so annoyed!!!!!

- LizThis company changes it's name every few months. My grandmother informed me of a call she was receiving regarding a loan in my name. Funny thing is the phone number they called is a number that is never used. A number that I don't have for my grandmother. It was a land line. She gave me the information, and I called them. They informed me of a loan that I took out online in 2011. This was 2014 when they contacted my grandmother. I have NEVER taken out a loan and would NEVER take a loan out online! Seriously?! They had some wierd address for me but also had the last 4 of my social and the type of car I drove. They informed my they would take my car. I knew it was a joke! I filed a police report, and never heard from them again...unitl now.... They call themselves ISS now, and are still talking about the same loan. SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!!! Do not send this "company" any money! Do not give them ANY information!

- Penny| 1 replyJust got a call on my cell phone giving me a case number and when I looked at the caller ID phone to get their number it was a different number. They said a local merchant verified I owed a bill and my case number is this. A SCAM.
- Alfalfa replies to PennyHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
