SCAM ALERT: Your computer will suddenly freeze and a message will appear that you must not shut off your pc or it will crash and catastrophic failure will result. You are then prompted to call this number that is identified as being associated with Microsoft support staff. Then you get connected to some high-pressure blowhard identifying himself as DANIEL QUINN from GEAK SUPPORT (which Microsoft has no association with whatsoever) trying to convince you that your computer is infected with viruses, blah blah blah, and how they can fix your problem for the discounted price of $400 if you'll hand over your credit card info right now. The scam is that GEAK SUPPORT is the creator of the virus in the first place, then they try to hold your computer system hostage until you pay up. IMPORTANT NOTE: your pc was never in any danger in the first place -- you'll be able to shut it and restart it, so do not share any information with "Geak Support" -- they are scam artists trying to rip you off.

RANSOMWARE is a computer virus that Geak Support is attempting to use to rip people off, especially those who might be visiting porn sites in particular. Click on the wrong photo and your pc will suddenly appear to be unusable until you call the number that's displayed on your monitor. Then you'll be connected to someone trying to pass themselves off as being from a legitimate company associated with Microsoft and they'll immediately interrogate you with an accusatory "WHAT WERE YOU DOING TO CAUSE YOUR COMPUTER TO LOCK UP, SIR?". Then after posing as the good guy who'll take care of your problem for you, they'll progressively become more obnoxious and start pushing hard for you to reveal your credit card information to them to "unlock" your computer. If that doesn't work, they'll try scare tactics in bullying you into submission. Don't fall for it, it's all [***].

My research has shown that "Geak Support" (not to be confused with the similarly-named Geek Support) tries to rip off unsuspecting callers to the tune of $400-$600 (US funds). BEWARE! This company is a total fraud and you're encouraged to contact the authorities should you ever have the misfortune of dealing with them.

From Wikipedia: "Ransomware is a type of malware that restricts access to the infected computer system in some way, and demands that the user pay a ransom to the malware operators to remove the restriction."

Unfortunately these scammers called while I was at work and spoke to spouse. They convincing got our banking information to the tune of $250.  When I discovered what they had done, while they were "helping us" get rid of the virus spouse contacted me and I looked up on computer to discover what they really are. They tried to get money from bank today but I had stopped ACH withdrawal.  We'll see what happens now.  I called them immediately and the chick on the line got SUPERDEFENSIVE.  Guess you don't like to be called what you are "liars and scammers."  Probably not heard the last from them

Unsure if this company is legitimate or if they are a fraud. I had to call them to unlock a freeze on my system.

REALLY???   Why do they use a name that is a well known company in the USA??  Why are you on a complaint website if you are so happy??

Looks like a SHILL ALERT - especially since you insulted someone who actually posted useful information.!

I dont disagree with that point. But the reason i found myself on this page in the first place is because I received a phone call from an indian gentleman yesterday telling me he worked for microsoft directly, and i told him i already have a plan with geak support. But, he told me it was a scam and showed me this page as his "proof". So of course I was curious. I hung up and called geak support myself to question a supervisor. I spoke with David for a while and inevitably avoided being scammed by the indian company who wanted $19.99/month for the rest of my life. Ive used these guys maybe only 2-3 times but ive had success with them and if saying someone needs a girlfriend is "insulting" to someone who was helpful, how is what your saying not insulting to me and my positive experience with this company? Your trying to make me seem uncredible simply for writing someone a good review?!

Who's this David character work for, business address, #, webpage? What you're shoveling stinks buddy. Dealing with random calling Indians and buying their word will get you what you pay for, and MORE. Outside of "David", you've said absolutely nothing about who he is outside beating around the bush--something con artists excel in.

i had a completely great experience with Geak Support and their staff. I hadn't been running any protection on my Windows 8 computer for over a year and I had many different infections and ended up taking into Best Buy. I got the computer back and 3 weeks later when I received an alert on my computer I called the number displayed and I got someone named Brad on the phone from Geak support in Florida and he very patiently spent over an hour trying to get connected because of all the interference from the viruses on my pc. He did an easy to understand step by step diagnostic (free of charge) to troubleshoot what was going on. He first recommended I take it to the store and to put protection on the pc but I had just been to Best Buy and 350$ later I was having all the same issues and worse only a month later! I ended up signing up for a remote repair and lifetime antivirus protection all in total of 450$. They also said if anything ever happened that I could call back and they would clean and tune up the computer free of charge. I've had zero problems since and that was 3 months ago. Although I was having issues with my google chrome and I called their customer service number and spoke to Joanna who got connected and got chrome working for me again free of charge. Every time I've taken computers into Best Buy they want to charge me 299$ and up to fix. And try to get me to sign up for a protection plan for 200$ per year. So for 450$ I have unlimited lifetime support and lifetime antivirus protection. I am very pleased with the services they offered and the price. Not to mention the convenience of never having to pack up my computer and take it into the store every time something goes wrong.

Does anyone else smell anything Geaky? Just curious, what company is providing you the A/V protection?

Well hot diggity for you. I'm glad you're gullible enough to follow instructions that pop up on your screen when your computer's in a time of despair. It's got to be ensuring to know you're willing to believe some character you have no way of knowing if he is who he says he is. It may just be me, however, I'd certainly feel more comfortable dealing with tech support I either can see in person or contact at my own convenience, rather than following instructions by a random pop up. No wonder your computer has problems.
