Guy called, said that his name was Jeff, and said that he was calling on behalf of the offices of Jacobson and Wright. He said that he was notifying me that his client was requesting to finalize paperwork involving a formal complaint which was filed in their office and attached to my name and SSN. He said that failure to call them back would lead to them proceeding with the case against me.

Any idea if this is legitimate? I don't even know who their client is!

It's just a debt collection agency , they have debt they own or from a client , its legit I don't know what they can do legally, they would be outsourcing with a legal agency.  Its legit debt though through creditors for mostly payday loans I think.  This is not a scam at all.  They will send letters out with verification of debt , I reviewed mine and confirmed I did take out the payday loan.   I advise people not to mess with payday loans the interest rates and late fees can get you .

I also received this voicemail and since I have no outstanding debts I ignored it.  However, a relative called me a few hours later to say she got a message from this Jacobson and Wright company looking for me.  I won't put up with my relatives being harassed so I called and spoke to Patrick O'Neill.  He told me they were getting ready to send my file to court.  I asked who he was representing and it's a company I've never heard of for a debt supposedly incurred in 2011.  I've been monitoring my credit for the last 2 years and I have no charge-off accounts on my credit.  I let him know I used to be a collections rep and I would need proof of the debt since it was unfamiliar to me.  He said he would just mark my file as closed due to unwillingness to cooperate.  I again requested a letter outlining the alleged debt so I could review it.  At that point he hung up on me.  Real debt collectors actually try to collect money.  They don't hang up on people for asking for verification of a debt.  This definitely looks like a scam.

Same as most other callers.  Left voice-mail on cell and at work.  He said that he was notifying me that his client was requesting to finalize paperwork involving a formal complaint which was filed in their office and attached to my name and SSN. If I do not settle the debt they will send the case to a judge for final ruling. Never identified himself or the company he was representing.

I just got a call and the debt seemed familiar but after 7 years I don't understand why now they contact me and I can't get any info on them. He was quick to send an email and won't let me mail in payments. I'm scheduled to pay today but when I get a call I will ask for the info to be mailed.

A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

Got the same message as everyone else. They also called my sister and left a message on her machine about me owing for bad checks. This was violation of Fair Debt Practices and I called him back and left a message that was against the law and also the threat of a lawsuit was also against the law. I told them if I they kept threating me and calling my relatives and leaving information about me (which they can only call to locate you not to tell them anything else) that I would press charges against them. It scared my sister to death because she thought it was a law firm. They called on a Wednesday and said they would file within 72 hours. 72 hours would be a Saturday. Just sounds fishy to me!

    Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.
