- JeanneSteven Sanchez called me yesterday. He had my name, birthdate and knew the first 5 numbers of my ssn. When I called this number back, I got a recording saying that Steven Sanchez was on another call, and to leave a message including the case reference number that he left on my machine.
He claimed that someone using all my information tried to open a $1,000 loan from SunTrust bank and they bounced a check. He gave the case # as EL10028.- Caller: Steven Sanchez

- Jane| 2 repliesSeems to be a trend. Steve Sanchez called and left a VM with some information about me and supposedly being associated with a family member's loan/check bounce. I spoke with the supposed family member and they didn't open a loan in that amount ever.
Additionally, to leave specific information about me or them on a VM? That's not the way a company or bank operates. Not a professional organization/person.
This is a pure SCAM that has gained some information about people, in general, from former customers somehow.
I hope Steve Sanchez burns for it.- Call type: Debt collector
- Alfalfa replies to Jane| 1 replyHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - JohnAsk yourself a question before calling some person or company back like that. If they ACTUALLY leave specific and private ID information about you in a VM, how reputable is that organization? Companies and Banks do NOT do that. Don't be a victim of this scam.. Think logically everyone!

- Jane replies to AlfalfaI know. But, some may not know this. Thanks for posting it! I'm sure it will be invaluable to others. :)

- DaveSteven Sanchez call my mom three days ago and claimed I had taken a 750.00$ loan out from U.S.Bank in 2012. He told her that she was a co-signer on said loan an that I had defaulted on it and with penalties it was now showing a 905.00$ balance. He had her SS# and said that if this is not paid the bank would proceed with Felony charges against me. I got no further than the same messages as these other people got when trying to reach Mr Sanchez. It sounds like, after reading these other posts that he is changing up his tactics and maybe going after our elderly parents. BEWARE THIS IS A SCAM PEOPLE! I hope this helps someone out and that they aren't reading this after sending Mr SCAMCHEZ any money.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.
