I got a phone call today from an unavailable caller, so I didn't answer. Someone left me a voicemail staying his name was Steve and was a process officer with a neighboring county's court district. He was calling because he had papers to serve me and if I had any questions about it to contact the lawyers handling the case with the phone number. He had left my name and last 4 of my ssn, plus a case id number on the voicemail. I called the number and it was answered by Tom. I gave him my name and case number and was directed to Steven Wills. He is supposed to be the lawyer. He explained that I had a payday loan out from 2011 and if I didn't pay I was going to have papers served on me tomorrow for about $4500, or I could pay for $800 today. I told him I didn't remember getting that loan and was trying to figure out what was going on in my life at the time. He then broke it down that I could pay $235 every two weeks for 3 months to avoid going to court. I was still questioning what was going on and he told me that he didn't mean to be rude but he had numerous things to do today and needed to know what I was going to do. I told him that I would call him back and let him know.i then called the county that I supposedly had court in and they have no record of my name in their court and also don't even hold court next week like the voicemail said. I called the number back and asked for a direct line and their physical address, in which was told that they didn't have a direct line, that was their phone number, and gave me an address that comes up as a virtual office, 300 Delaware ave suite 210 Wilmington, de 28901. I called back a 3rd time later this afternoon and was told that my priveledge to pay early was being revoked and he was going to be happy to sue me, and not to call back anymore. I even verified with the payday loan. Reporting agency that I have not gotten a payday loan since 2010

Got the same message from a Steve.   Glad I looked up the number.  Said he would be at my house between 12 and 3 to serve papers.

Did anything ever come from these? I received a call from a Steve regarding papers being served. The phone number that shows as it being from comes up as the snohomish  county sheriff office for type tyranny. The place they mentioned I have had a payday loan from in the past. I thought it had been paid off but wasn't sure and didn't have any of my files records fr that time period to verify. I gave them my debit card number (they were unwilling to accept a pre-paid greendot card). However they said they would send me a confirmation within 10 minutes of the end of the call and told me that legally by law they had to send me a written notice. I have received neithwe and have tried to call the payday loan place they mentioned several times and have been unable to reach anyone so I don't even know if they are still In business. Without written notice that this place is a legitimate law office for collections I didon't not put money on the account I gave them. Just got another car that I was going to be served tomorrow. I have no way of verifying thwith legitimacy of this place.

Prepaid green dot card should be enough to tell you how real it is. Best call your bank and get a different card or they'll siphon your funds. Just because a voice on the phone says you owe money doesn't mean you do. If you've got nothing in the mail as of late, you're likely in smooth water. Tell Steve to go jump in a lake.

Look carefully read the following:It is incumbent upon them to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it.  Not the other way around.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices:  http://consumerfraudreporting.org/stateattorneygenerallist.php

Now cancel the debit card and make sure they haven't taken any money out.  if they have, then file a fraud report.
