- Jay| 1 replyThis number called a friend of mine looking for me and claimed to be with st.louis county to file documents. Seems like a scam to me.
- TJMy sister got a call from this number saying they needed to find me because they had certified legal documents. They gave her a reference number and this phone number to call them back. I called back and a woman answered, 'legal department' with dogs barking in the background. I asked what company she was from and she said she was a paralegal services company and needed my reference number. I gave that to her, since it came from them anyway, and she then knew my name and immediately tried to get me to give her the last 4 numbers of my social security number. I refused telling her I wasn't an idiot. She claimed I had nothing to worry about. I told replied, 'I wasn't born yesterday. When I call the bank, they ask me for the last 4 numbers of my SSN number for confirmation and if she wasn't willing to identify herself and her company, she she [***] off. She [***] off.

- Call type: Debt collector
- BigA replies to Regina StephensDebt collection/Process server extortion scam. Never, ever pay them one single penny until you make the follow the letter of the law.
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices: https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general
Also note that they must inform you if the debt is past your state's statute of limitations and they cannot sue you anymore. - CWG40 replies to Regina StephensNo debt collector has anything to do with the criminal justice system. Being in ordinary civil debt is not a crime.
Report them:

The same goes for endless telephone harassment - Oregon FamilyMy sister received a call from this number from someone looking for me. They claim to be from the IAO or Issuing Agent Office for Washington County - she was given a document # to pass on to me and told if I didn't call them back at 844-331-1205 by 5pm today then a warrant would be put out for my arrest. My sister took the info, called my mother who in turn called me.
Didn't make sense to me which is why I googled the number first thing. My sister and mother however are very worried and upset which is [***] on these scammers part. They have managed to upset some very nice people.
I want to know how they got my name, connected my sister to me and called her on my mothers cell phon(she has my moms old number/phone)? That's what's scary to me.
They called from the phone number 503-207-2071 which is different from what number I was to call them back on. I googled this as well with the same findings-SCAM - cindy replies to JayThat just happened to me this morning
- DBNumber called my parents requesting me. Gave doc number and said call back. Called back. Sketchy voicemail greeting. Not too worried about it. Please keep this thread up to date with more info as it becomes available.

- Cmccnc2020| 3 repliesI received two separate calls. tried calling both numbers back. both were disconnected immediately after calling me. this is in the STL area as well. both numbers registered to Belleville, IL. 618-744-3401 & 618-212-3153. finally answered one of the calls in to find out they had tried to deliver legal documents to my address and that today would be the final time for them to deliver, that if i werent home to accept them it would end up being a court matter. they gave me a ref # and a number to call. called that number. gave my ref # and spoke with a guy supposedly named Carl Shelton. the papers that were supposedly delivered was to my grandmothers house. she said noone ever showed up to deliver papers. they are telling me i'm being sued for $3200 for an old checking account from almost 10 years ago. ChexSystems goes back 7 years. why am i just now getting this crap?

- CWG40 replies to Cmccnc2020Well, the answer's clear. They are scammers trying to scam you. That pretty much settles it. Don't you think?
No one showed up because there are no documents to be delivered. No legitimate process server calls you up in advance and tells you he or she is coming by. There are no court actions and there won't be. These scammers rely on threats.
Please read and memorize the following:
Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) The same goes for endless telephone harassment
Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question. As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes. The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question. Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else. So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you. Let the FTC sort it out.
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them. Tell 'em no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.
You have to get tuff with these people because, being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking). the only thing they understand. - Nat| 1 replyThis number called my dads phone looking for me stating they have legal documents that I need to come and pick up in person. They gave him a Doc# and told him that I need to call them back ASAP or they will deliver documents to my place of employment. I called the number back and no answer, the answering machine has no name of the company and gives no information as to what the call is in regards to.
- Tygerkat replies to NatRead CWG40's post above yours, if you didn't already. It tells you everything you need to know about these scammers.
Yours is the second post I've seen in two days where the "process server" wants the person being served to pick up their own paperwork. Talk about lazy scammers. - KayleenMy husband received 2 calls from these people today the first number is a Florida number 407-392-3071 and they told him not to answer the next call so they could leave a voicemail with reference number for him which came from an Alabama number 205-747-4889. They then told him when he called with the reference number that us bank was trying to collect a debt from 2009. Also told him that they were going to come to our home between 8-4 sometime tomorrow (Tuesday).
Husband called us bank and spoke with them and was told that his account was “solved” in 2011!- Caller: Unknown

- AnnaI received a phone call yesterday from a number with my same area code asking for my husband. They gave me a this number (844-331-1205) with a reference number, saying he needed to verify document information. He called the number today and was asked for the ref number. First if all, once he gave the number, they asked if he was someone completely different at first. Then asked for the last 4 of his SS #, while the lady read off the rest of it for him. Told him he owed a total of $2072 for a debt that was originally only $300 some, for a bank account (US Bank) that he never had before. After telling her that he had never banked through them before, she said he would need an attorney, and would have to go to court for the amount, or just pay the amount either way. If not, they would garnish his checks and/or take his truck away from him. So he asked for a letter to be sent to him, and gave them the new address, since the address they had, was one from his old house two years ago. Glad I decided to look up the number, and I suppose we'll see if they even send anything in the mail.

- CLigg replies to Cmccnc2020| 1 replyWe just had a similar experience today from a Carl Shelton, but the number was 844-870-9804. He had an issue when we mentioned wanting to discuss it with legal aid before paying anything. Did anything ever come from your encounter with them?
