Is this a scam number

Called me and my sister saying there was a claim against me in LA County and that I needed to call this number back. when i called the number, there is no menu or company name. I spoke to someone named Karen (?) and asked what company it was and she responded "This is National. Do you have an appointment with us? We would only call if you have an appointment."

Definitely a scam- they threatened to go to employer and all the other things the fake process servers do to scare you into paying money for some unknown debt. No company name, no verifiable address for phone.

Scam! Real process servers don't call in advance.

They didn’t ask for my info but instead had me verify. The company they asked about was a legit company I owed money too.  They did not ask for any money but instead read to me the allegations against me.  They told me their name was Jack Taylor and he worked for National. A filing service for a law office.  I believe it is a legit company. They said they are not a debt collection company just thought I would add that

The fake process server/location finder extortion SCAM usually consists of the following:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

Hey I just spoke to a Karen at “National” too. What ever came of your call? They called my father too claiming to be with a process server and a bogus case #. Called my local court no record of any filings against me.

After I spoke with "Karen", I never received a call back. I also reached to my local court and there were no proceedings. Definitely a scam as the calls have not continued since then.

I got the same message here in AZ. The womans name was Linda James she stated that my county would go to my place of employment to process me for some case the county has against me. The only thing that weirded me out was the case number contained the last 4 of my soc. Anything to make it look legit. Number was 844-369-6817

I received a call from a lady.  I could not understand a word she said as she spoke entirely too fast.  I did confirm anything,  I told her I would wait to receive an email.  I also told her that I would be reaching out the AG in my state if this was fraud and then hung up on her.  I blocked the number.  She then proceeded to call me back using the number 855-200-4839 saying that it was rude of me to hang up on her being woman to woman. I have blocked that number, as well.  I have saved her voicemail if I need to produce it to the AG.  BEWARE!
