I live in Utah, zip code 84536, I'm stuck with random calls when I got my number changed. This time I got a letter from Student Loan Consolidation & Payment Program Prepared for me, my loan is estimated over thousands of dollars and wanted me to log online (http://www.nslds.ed.gov) to get a FSA ID? Is this legit? There's a number to call (844)-410-1687 so I called the number and a guy answered saying everything can be forgiven but a payment will be made a total of $400 within three months, the end of October, Nov. 28 & Dec. 27, breaking it down in thirds. Right when he ask for my credit card I hung up. It sounds too good to be true, so I did a research online, looking up what numbers are TOLL FREE, come to find out the 844area code was not listed, plus it didn't state where this letter came from. I looked up the area codes in United States and I didn't find this area code. I'm still confused to see if it's a scam.. I'll see if this information helps you. Thank you Comasheena Benally for providing this information.  I received the same thing.  I'm glad I'm doing my research as I was going to contact these people (Document Service Center).

I got a similar letter, and it just looked "off" for a number of reasons. For one, it said "Final Notice" when I was already on a temporary payment plan with my student lender (Great Lakes), and it had vague things on it like "NEW LAWS DISCOUNTING FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS." Any Federal correspondence would be a little more specific, I'd think. Also, it estimated my loan debt at almost triple what it actually is. Finally, I already have a Federal ID number.

Any program wherein ones entire student loan debt would be forgiven for pennies on the dollar would be widely known. Usually the only time student loan debt is forgiven is 1) if you die or 2) if the school you're going to shuts down before you graduate.

Anyway, reading the literal fine print at the bottom, it clearly states that they're just a "fee-based program" that specializes in "document preparation" and that they're not actually "affiliated with the government or any of its programs."

This is misleading Spam at the very least, and realistically a Phishing scam.

I received this letter yesterday with the same script and it listed where I can get a FSA ID. I was tempted to call but I am forbearance with AES. I figure this is too good to be true and another scam to take your money.

This letter is a scam.  Any government letters will have a return address clearly on the outside of the envelope.  The area code code be in the United States but more probably the Caribbean as it is not only assigned to United States.  The fine print at the bottom is a clear warning:  "We offer private, fee-based application assistance to aid consumers in applying for government offered programs.  While such programs are available for free directly by various government agencies, our services are fee-based and focus on application and document preparation."  Banks will do this for free so why pay anyone.
My loans are down far enough that it would be stupid to refinance them.  That was the biggest red flag that this is an illegitimate student loan service.  As noted in another post on this page, student loan debt forgiveness is not just awarded to anyone and this business is misleading by making it appear anyone can get student loan forgiveness.
I will be contacting my state attorney general to see if something can be done to stop DCS and to find out how they are obtaining loan information - I didn't think this was free to the public information.
