How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller.If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Says a law firm robert anderson and associates and I owe one of there clients money, I never took out a payday loan.  Has my info.  Everything I see looks like a scam. Will not provide me with any information regarding such loan. Just that it was bmg payday loans.

It's a scam.               I got several calls from these idiots starting a couple of months ago.  After a couple of calls, they start talking about a warrant, never stating what the so called warrant is for.  One of the last ones I received basically threatened to sever said "warrant"  either at home or at my work and if they have to "serve" me at work they want my supervisor there.  (oh shudder shudder)  Nothing ever happened.  So today, I got another one.  It's a scam.  Same phone number & everything

Hey these jerks called me 9 times on the 2nd of Feb threatening me with everything you can imagine. I even spoke to this Robert Anderson, I asked him to mail me a copy of the debt and any and all other documents and he pretty much refused. Said I'd be served either at home or my place of employment. My first call was from 812-534-2545 by someone named Melissa Ann.

Someone called my mother.  I called back and it just kept going back to the original voice message.  R and A services.  Don't know what they want....I won't call them back again.

Got a call from them few weeks ago by a lady I didn't answer it so she left a threatning message saying I owe money and I'll be served papers for court and that they have 70 days to serve me. I blocked there number today I get a blocked call from a guy from the same company saying I'll be served sometime today at my house or work. The harass people for money and Im pretty sure it is a scam. I just don't ever answer there calls. No matter how thhreatning it gets. Especially now that its tax season There just out to scam.

I called that number and they IDd themselves as something like Arne(?) and Associates.  No idea what that is.  They did not answer as Robert Anderson Law Office.

If they are unwilling to send you a debt validation letter by US mail (E-mail no good), just ignore them and block their calls.

I am an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive) and I can tell you that nobody but the government can intercept your income tax refund.  Period.  Certainly not a debt collector.  There may be some cases where courts could order such a thing,  but I've never heard of it in an ordinary civil debt proceeding.

This appears to be a debt scamming operation of  some kind.

Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  DIME  until the debt is validated.

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.

If they continue to bother you, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

I keep having missed calls from robert anderson agency 8445598328.  What do I do? I've already told them off 3 times.

I have a con artist calling me

This number 844 559 8328 has called me many times in the last two days, called them back and was told I owed 450 from a pay day loan back in November 2011. The guy seemed very unprofessional and I told him I would call my bank and get statements to show at I don't owe, asked for fax number couldn't provided one. This is really a scam and they will be getting no money from me...beware

Got a call from 844-559-8328.  After i called it back the lady i talked to, Melissa Ann, said I had a 480 payday loan from September 2011 outstanding and that if i didn't settle the account with her that i would be going to court and receive a tax lien.  I asked for all kinds of information which she could only vaguely answer with no contact information for these companies.  The companies were BMG or bahama marketing group, shamrock pay day loans, BHO (which she didnt know what that stood for even though it was supposedly their client) and her company was UAG or United Asset Group.  She gave me this number 832-514-2545 to call her back by tomorrow or she would be filing the account and good luck to me.  After only 2 minutes searching online I figure this to be a scam, not to mention the fact that I never got a shamrock payday loan ever.  Never heard of any of these places and never have been contacted by mail regarding this debt.  TOTAL SCAM!! Cant wait to call back and prank call these geeks!!

I have just called that number and told them to take my name off the list they have. I have gotten OVER 50 messages a week looking for a Cara Page who I have NEVER heard of. I just told told the lady to STOP calling me! People are stupid!

The address for that company had a phone number attached.  I called.  That number is disconnected.

They called and left a voicemail saying me or a member of my team needs to call back to take carr of a matter. They said the company name was UAG.

I just got a call from them saying that my sign is available and they need to go over the details with me.... I have no clue what they are talking about....Didn't leave a company name.
