whomever this is, they're using scare tactics as a means to get you to cough some money. This brings up a larger question regarding the safety and security of our personal information -- how safe is our information? The answer is, it is not! The banks sell our information and it gets trapped in the black market of scammers and thieves. I wish banks did not sell our info and that our info was secure. It's nerve wrecking to think you're being summoned to court when you're not doing anything wrong.

I got a phone call from this same number today. It was a guy telling me there is a debt to collect from a payday loan that i supposedly took out in 2013. I told him that i never took a payday loan out from anyone,  he told me that i would be summoned to court. This really made me feel sick to my stomach and i contacted an attorney about this. I then looked up this same 844 number and apparently its some type of scam going on, and i called this 844 number and the recording said its county mediation.

They ID themselves as "Global mumble-mumble".   The robo-greeter has some sort of accent.  I' m thinking this is some sort of off-shore scamming operation.  Simply ignore and block the calls.

Criminals are masquerading as debt collectors in an attempt to extort money from people by scaring them into believing that:
    a.    You are going to be sued and it will cost you lots of money when they allegedly “win” their case.

    b.    That they are about to file criminal charges or that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, even though debt is civil not criminal, there are no criminal charges, and debtor’s prison was outlawed over 200 years ago.
    c.    That they will take away your driver’s license.
    d.    That will garnish your wages without actually being suing you, going to court, or even winning a case and obtaining a judgement followed by a judge’s consent to the garnishment.  They also claim that your wages will be garnished in amounts far above all legal limits.

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They often call people that have never even been associated with you because they get erroneous information off of the internet.

They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, “Law Office” or claim that they are a “Lawyer or Paralegal” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws, even though they do have to follow those laws.  They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council" or that “the case will proceed without you” which is pretty much nothing but hogwash.  They tell you that they need a “statement” from you regarding the complaint and if you don’t call back they “wish you good luck as things unfold”. They use the phrase “consider yourself notified/served” or “govern yourself accordingly” a lot, something they should do themselves.

They claim they are officers of the court, or that an officer will accompany them, or even that they are sending officers to arrest you.  All hogwash.  They tell you to lock up your dogs and guns for “everyone’s” protection.  More hogwash.

They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency and tell you that they are a “process server”. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I have received several calls like this over the past several year,  including this one just today. These calls have been made to my father looking for me as well, which is even more comical seeing I haven't lived there in over 20 years. Made my father nervous. I reassured him, it's nothing.

I just block these numbers and save the messages I receive. If I ever find out who it is it, I will report them to the Attorney General's office.

Clearly these are scammers trying to scare money out of unsuspecting people. Nobody likes trouble, least of all legal worries.  I don't take pre recorded messages of that nature seriously. Nobody in their right mind would call you to let you know you were being served.

Technology is scary. None of our private information is safe. Terrfying. So, what to do when you receive these calls.... Block the number. If you have the displeasure of losing minutes of your life listening to the B.S. being spewed from their mouthes do NOT give out any of your informatiom. I know people who have almost fallen victim to this in the past.
Or obtain as much information as possible so you can report them. This nonsense needs to end.

This company has been calling me for an estranged daughter,  stating they are in litigation with her. I have continually told these people SHE doesn't live here nor is she reachable in any way from here. Still they call. Today I called back and tried to tell them she isn't here and to find out where they were located - no address was given. The woman Renee just like went off, told me contumely that "YOU people" need to shut up and pay your bill, when I tried once again to tell her she is not connected here, she started with the "YOU people" and put me on hold!  I am on the do not call list anyway. I just hung up and PA. Attorney General and the FCC to file complaints. I have since found out they are a scam.

I just got this same phone call saying they were calling from a pay day loan in 2011.  They told me that i would owe $7,500 in court but would settle for $515.  I asked for validity of the debt (which he responded was not his responsibility), also the name of the company (county mediation) and address (alpharetta, GA) then gave them my debit card number.  I realized what happened immediately and ran to Chase cancelled my debit card and made them aware of the situation. So dumb, i am a widowed mother of a 3 year old, the last thing i can afford is go to court.  Fortunately they did not get any money!
