- Harley Whipsnead| 1 replyMy internet browser froze and a message came on the screen telling me to call my internet provider. It had the correct name of my internet provider (Cox) and a phone number. I googled the phone number and didn't get any reliable hits. I have not dialed the number because I suspect it is a scam.
- Dawnikins| 2 repliesI got a message when I typed a URL incorrectly. "WARNING: Comcast Cable Customer- Your Internet Explorer browser and computer may be compromised by security threats. Call 844-600-6225 now for IMMEDIATE assistance."
As a former employee and current customer of Comcast, I knew this was a fraud. Do not click the window or call the phone number. Power off your system immediately and scan for malware. - Texas12 replies to Harley WhipsneadI had the same experience. My Malware detector didnot find a virus.

- stephanie replies to TONY ORDONEZ| 1 replydid the same to me today very rude, was it just a scam. is your computer fine
- Buy GOOD antivirus software replies to stephanieIn space no one can hear you scream. However here they can. The pop-up/your computer is infected scam is just that, a scam, & a very well known one. There are a large quantity of good antivirus software, as well as excellent free ones. Turning over control of your computer to a foreign company, who will extort hundreds of dollars out of you, is not a prudent move. It will however provide you, when they are done with it, an excellent anchor for your boat. No one should touch your computer except you, & a local brick & mortar repair shop.

- Kick Myself| 3 repliesI got a message taking up my whole computer screen and also a voice telling me to call 844-600-6224 before using my computer any further because it may be compromised by a security threat. They claimed to be Suddenlink (which is my Internet provider). I could not close the message out! I called the number. The voice that answered did not say who it was but I was given 2 options: press 1 for technical issues or press 2 for hardware issues. I pressed 1. That person eventually turned me over to another "technical support." It was a company called OneBit IT. They assured me I had malicious malware and offered to get rid of it for $150 on my credit card. I fell for it and let them remote control my computer for several hours. At the end of that time my computer seemed fine and perhaps faster (but I had not been having problems before). It was then I started thinking it might be a scam so I called Suddenlink and they said it was NOT them who put the warning on my computer. After calling the number and informing them I knew they were not really Suddenlink and threatening to initiate a charge-back through my bank they issued me a refund. I then canceled my credit card and changed some passwords just in case.
- Mary replies to Kick Myself| 2 repliesHow do you get the message off the screen?
- KLM replies to DawnikinsYou can use your Task Manager to end the task - the pop-up appears to read your modem and inserts your internet service provider's name after entering a bad URL address. If only this much evil could be refocused on good, imagine a better world :-D.
- KLM replies to Mary| 1 replyRight mouse click your task bar (near your PC clock) and select Start Task Manager. In the Applications tab, find your browser application, click on to it and click the End Task button at the bottom of the form. Run any virus solution you're using and you *should be* good to go. It's what I did anyhow and I'm fine...and I did NOT call their number. I make no guarntees, I only offer suggestions. Good Luck. Another suggestion if I may, if a company asks you for your credit card number, ask them for their tax identification number because you're a non-profit and you need to report to the IRS...see if they're still willing to help you then.
- LPIt popped up on my phone browser, how do I get rid of it?
- Zac replies to KLMThanks a lot, I was able to remove this annoying malware the Taskmanager.
