- Jay| 2 repliesReceived a call early this morning around 7 from a guy named Russell Scrims who list a DA number and says a complaint has been filed against me which demands my immediate attention. I know this is a scam because he didn't give me a company name and he called June 21 and left me a different number to call. Which by the way I have found out other people have been contacted by that same number. The other number was 8443648471.
- CWG40 replies to JayThis "Russell Scrims" persona also appears on 844-364-8467 800notes. Using that same sort of phony "DA" file number. This is most likely the "Ashford Council Partners " scam. Not clear exactly where they are located.

In any event,
Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) The same goes for endless telephone harassment
Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question. As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes. The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question. Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else. So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you. Let the FTC sort it out.
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because, being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking). the only thing they understand. - Amber Harrison| 2 repliesI have been receiving harassing phone calls, which always come up as unavailable since October of 2016. It is now July 2017. I have spoken to at least 4 different people associated with this phone number. The number left in my voicemail as a contact is 844-755-4702. The first time I received the call, I was informed that I owed money for a credit card debt that dates back to 2009. They gave me the option to pay over the phone. I knew I had no credit cards at that time, so I knew that if it was legit, it wasn't from debt I had accrued. My first thought was that someone had stolen my identity and obtained credit using my info. However, I began to think this was a scam after doing some research. I consulted a lawyer and let them know some of the things I was encountering. The lawyer also believed it to be a scam. They never once asked me for my address and refused to send me a validation of debt letter, which the lawyer told me is my legal right based on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. They also yelled at me, laughed at me, and often hung up the phone on me. They threatened to serve me a warrant at work but seemed to be unaware of my employer's address. The lawyer I consulted also told me that warrants are served in criminal proceedings not civil, which credit card debt falls under. I also did some research of my own and found that the statute of limitations had passed. I thought about calling the credit card company but was advised against it because I was told it resets the statute of limitations (in the event that someone had stolen my identity). They had my name, a previous address, my birthdate, and last 4 of my SSN. I think this may have happened because one of the two states I've lived in sells their drivers license data to third party companies. Yes, you read that right. At any rate, they have stopped calling my phone and have starting contacting me through Google Hangouts. I have considered changing my phone number as I have been harassed for nine months. I am now getting ready to contact the attorney general in my state to report this number as fraudulent.

- BigA replies to Amber HarrisonOnly a payment can restart the SOL. Further, if you are the victim of identity theft, you are not legally responsible for those debts, so it wouldn't matter if the SOL was restarted or not. Here are some links that will help you and you should report them to the CFPB as well:
Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices: https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general
If your feel you SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS. Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039). Also file a report at the FTC Identity Theft web site as well as learn what else you need to do:

https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/report-identity-theft - Julie| 1 replyMust be a scam. Received a call on my cell phone indicating legal action would be taken and a complaint has been filed (provided a name of a long deceased relative who never had this number). I am supposed to call immediately. Caller ID was unknown but the number they provided was 844-755-4702 and the name of the caller was Corey Collins and gave some random case number. They make it sound like they are a debt collector or some such. DO NOT PROVIDE INFO. Total spam/scam
- Caller: Corey Collins
- Call type: Debt collector
- ChrisScam. Some BS about a complaint filed with some random DA number. Caller blocks number and is carful to give no specific information. Multimple complants about this number by many people over the past several months. Best to just ignore and block this caller.

- Tony A| 4 repliesI started receiving these calls a few days ago, the caller says his name is Mark Matthews and gives some file number. The first calls I got was a Computer generated voice that wished me luck as the situation unfolded upon me, same message as the IRS scams. Then I started getting calls from this Mark Matthews and he even called my ex-wife and left a message on her phone. I will be contacting a attorney today and filing a report with the Los Angeles Police department, scam or dept collector or whatever this maybe they are breaking the law!!!!!!!
- Caller: No name
- BigA replies to Tony A| 3 repliesAn attorney will do you no good since you don't know who they are or where they can be served. The police department doesn't have jurisdiction, nor was an actual crime committed that they have jurisdiction over. This is why both CWG40 and I have listed the proper places to report to.
- SharonVoicemail (in stern voice) from 'unknown' number: "This message demands the immediate attention of (name I don't know) file number DAXXXXXX. My name is Anthony Gonzalez and I'm contacting you in reference to a complaint that may be filed against you. To discuss these pending actions, you need to call back the firm in control of this matter at 844-755-4702. Unfortunately, this is now time sensitive and failure to respond will result in the department proceeding without your consent. Please be advised that this call has now been logged and submitted as proof that you have been formally notified of the matter. We'll be expecting your call and I wish you the best of luck."
I wanted to call them back and tell them, "No, best of luck to YOU when you end up in jail for running an extortion scam" -- But I don't want to tip them off that their "formal" notification was to the wrong person. - StevenI keep receiving private calls saying that a claim has been filed against me which needs my immediate attention with a DA number saying that if I don't tend to this matter immediately, legal action will be taken against me without my consent! I do not return their calls and I want to know how can I block them when they're calling me blocked? I'm tired of the harassment what can I do? These are the two names of the people who are calling me Latasha Pittman and Russell Scrims!
- Caller: Russell Scrims & Latasha Pittman
- gay| 2 repliesme too!!! They left a DA reference number. I never called him back. This scammer even found my sister and told her the same thing while looking for me. Listen, if this were a legal company, they would find your address and send you a certified letter!! period! Report these [***]!!!

- Rozella CruzA, Mark Williams from Ashford Litigation Services left me a voice mail looking for my dad with the following number to return call - 844-755-4702 and a DA#302177. I called the number back and a live male voice answered the phone. They would not give me any information since I am a third party. I was relieved when I Googled the aforementioned number and read postings from other folks who received calls from these scammers.
- Caller: Ashford Litigation Services
- Richard shawThat number was calling me saying I had a past due credit card bill and wanted me to set up a payment arrangement
- Caller: Nationwide
- Call type: Debt collector
- Della Ramsdellthreatening call claiming a action being filed against me, no company name given.
- Caller: Zehr Murphy
- SandyJust got a call exactly like the others described. Scam.
- Emma replies to JulieI just got the same call -- no caller ID. That's suspicious right there. I never answer unless I know the person calling, but the caller left a voice mail with the same story, complete with a phony DA case number, and gave the name as an in-law I haven't been in touch with for a couple of decades. That in-law would not have my cell phone number. This is a clever scam, because somehow they dug up my cell #, which of course is on the do-not-call registry, and linked it to her. Just like your deceased relative. It can fool people, when they hear that the caller has a relative's name, and if they believe the relative is in trouble, they'll want to help. These scammers are so obnoxious.
- Lisa replies to JaySame here. Called my work over the past two days and two family members one who I don't even have the phone number of. No one would give up my info. I called back and we're very unprofessional and yelling at me on the phone so I block them.
- Jen replies to Amber HarrisonI had the exact same experience. Couldn't believe they actually called my work and try to get my info. When I called back the number I was also yelled at. I haven't had a credit card since 2007 and had no idea what this was regarding. They're apparently trying to find my address and phone number to serve me with "legal documents". I feel very violated but definitely not responding and have block that number since this morning. I'm sure they will find other ways of harassing me .
- viper replies to gay| 1 replyDoes anyone get calls from a Mike Richards? I get calls from 8447554702 and a Mike Richards is on the other end saying I will be sued in court if I don't pay him. The credit card is from 14 plus years ago and doesn't even show up on my credit report anymore. Any suggestions on what to do?
- BigA replies to viper"Any suggestions on what to do?" Yes. Your question has been answered in this thread by both myself and CWG40. I suggest you read those posts and use the information in them to help yourself.
