I received a threatening call from a local number claiming to be the courthouse in my county. I tried to call that number back and it was a fax machine. I called the number they asked me to call back on which is 1-844-804-6079. They made me believe I was up for charges on check fraud related to a payday loan from 2011. I ultimately believed them because I thought they were the courthouse and they had my full ss# . They scammed me and I'm working with my bank to get my money back. Don't believe these people!

received a call from a restricted number and I was left this number as a callback number, 8448046079  for another individual, for check fraud. Saying that this was notice that issue would go to court or some bs. Called this number back, they did answer, and gave them the case number. Fellow asked if I knew that individual which I did not. Fellow said that my number would be removed and would not be bothered in the future. Will wait and see.

Check fraud is a crime.  If you were suspected of that crime you'd have been interviewed on a face-to-face basis by member of law enforcement in your community.  But prior to that, the bank would have notified you of the check and tried to settle with you before making a police complaint.  A payday loan creates a civil liability.  Being in ordinary civil debt is NOT a crime and you cannot be prosecuted for it.  There's no way a defaulted payday loan can be magically transformed into some sort of criminal offense.    Debt collectors have nothing to do with the criminal justice system.

This is nothing more than an attempt to scare money out of you.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

regarding the above recent message-the number they called from was from the courthouse -county clerk but gave the 844-804-6079 to reference to-how is this possible? Investigator (forgot his last name)

I know this is a scam.  First let's answer the question "how is this possible?"  It is called Caller ID spoofing and they can set the number and caller Id to anything they want.  If they wanted you to think that the White House was calling they could.  It is illegal in this instance, and you can easily learn more on the internet, I know Wikipedia has a good article on it.

Now, why would you need to go with this so called "investigator" to file charges against yourself?  You wouldn't.  Read the following:

Criminals masquerading as debt collectors attempt to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished without actually being sued or going to court, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, or “Law Office” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws.  They do have to follow those laws, but they won’t.  They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency.  They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council", which is pretty much nothing but hogwash.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices:   https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general

In addition, notify the local courthouse that their number is being spoofed in this scam so that they can warn people.

These people have called myself threatening me with profanities and my wife being lewd. I/we are not the person they are looking for. So you all of you know, the last idiot I spoke to there made the mistake of telling me that they are located in Erie, PA. He finally gave the name of the company as Consumer Arbitration Services. I am trying to find the physical address and have contacted an attorney in Erie. I will post the address when I get it. On the other hand, If I find the physical address it won't have to be posted, you will all get to see it on the news.
