7-27-18 A women called my daughter in law and asked for my number claiming to be a debt collector then called me  and claimed  I was being taken to court over a cash advance loan from 2014.  I said I never used a cash advance p;ace and she asked if one of my coworkers could have gotten my info. Then threatened to have the police come and serve me and garnish my pay . I was put on hold  so I hung up.   my wife wanted to see if it was a scam so she called the number back two days in a row and left messages, asking for a return call. we've not heard back from them.   I  think it's a scam number.

Yes, this is a scam.  The police do not serve papers and they do not garnish wages.  Make them follow the law and they will come up with all sorts of excuses why they shouldn't.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I got this call today, unknown caller but the city that was listed is a tiny town in my state. about 5 minutes before this call I got one from another little city, unknown caller and I didn't answer that one- I'm assuming it was the same. From everything I can find online it looks like its a scam. I haven't tried to call it back

So, I just called this number back out of curiosity.. I was told that I had committed wire fraud by writing a check and then closing the bank account before it was allowed to be cashed. she said the amount was like $502.19. She said I could rectify and pay it right now or if they take me to court it could be over $2,000. She said its a felony over $500. I asked her the bank name and I've never even heard of it before and cant find that bank online. I asked for the date this supposed check was written and she said that its "X'd" out and she cant see it, she just mediates. I'm like "you expect me to just pay you $500 for a bank that Ive never even heard of, and I've had the same bank for years...." The creepy thing was she had my address and social... ugh. And she was American- no accent or anything. Crazy!

Most of the fake debt collection calls are made by home grown American criminals.  If there really was a felony involved, no scummy pretend debt collector would be handling it.  They can't give you any information because this is all made up.  In addition to what I posted:

If you feel your SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS.  Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039):

SCAM!!  And rude!  Refused to provide any proof.  Threatened me with garnishment or court if I didn’t pay $510 plus 40% interest over the phone.  When I said I’ll just go court because I do not owe this he hung up on me.  When I called back and said you just hung up on me and I want to make sure you have my correct address to send my court papers he rudely said “I do” I asked what address he had on file and interrupted me by putting me on hold for 5 minutes would have been longer but I gave up and hung up.

Got a call person claiming to be a county mediator telling me I have been served, and leaving a claim #. The funny thing instead of him speaking my name a computerized voice is inserted in the message that says my name. This is a scam.
