They called my work saying they were sending a deputy out to service me with papers, when i asked what it was about they td me i had to call  844-849-9363  and ask for att: james beck. When i called the number i got a lady on the phone that said mr beck was not in the office and she was going to give me to one of his co workers. A guy named elliot came on and td me that i took out a loan back in 2011 and i owed $2596.45 but if i paid $1514.15 today they would settle it it would be voided from my credit report. I was so nerved up about someone coming to my job that i td them i could pay $700 he quickly sent me to another lady from cooper financial  and then they set up a payment plan. I quickly got off the phone and looked up the number under google and got nothing but people saying how they scammed them or it is a scam. I quickly called my bank to cancel my credit card.Debit card. Now they keep calling my place of employment and harassing me.

A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via Green Dot, MoneyGram, Western Union, prepaid gift card or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

Got a call at work today from some guy named Thomas Little who claims he is an independent process server and asked me if I knew there was a summons for me, told him no, he said"ok well call this number and I will take you off my schedule, I don't want to come out there and you have no idea why, it's kind of a waste of time for me". I then asked where he was located, and he told me "Canton, but the number I'm calling from is probably blocked because I work for the state" sounds kinda fishy! I called the number he gave me 832-271-5672, and got some guy who said his name so fast I couldn't understand, asked him what this was all about and he said 2 payday loans from 2012. Now I'm not sure but I swore I paid one of them in full, and don't ever recall taking the other so I asked for it in writing by mail, he said "ok and as soon as you get it you will have about 21 days to dispute, pay on your own accord or go to court" . Also isn't there a statute of limitations on certain types of debt that cannot be collected after so many years?  I'm thinking this is all a scam, but just want to cover my bases.

    Is this a scam?
I received a phone call yesterday from a man asking for my mother, saying that there are papers being served to her in 2 days, if she does not contact them. They then proceeded to call my home phone in which is in my name as well leaving a voice mail for my mother. So I contacted my mother and had her call them. She then spoke to someone and they said they are a mediation group calling from buffalo New York, trying to collect debt from a payday loan. mind you the loan is from 2012, my mother is disabled and is on a fixed monthly income. So she told them that they said she could pay 300 today and then 100 a month until its paid off. The total they said is 1926. When she gave me this info I decided to look up the phone number they gave her to contact them back and both numbers are from Texas and they are wireless numbers. The number they gave her is 832-271-5672 They told her she has 2 days to figure it out or she will be served papers. How do I know if this is true? My poor mother who has nothing is worried now because of these dumb people. Please tell me whats going on!!
