Just got a call from them on my landline.  Much like the others posted here.  The first guy said the IRS was filing a suit for check fraud against me.  Same heavy background noise noted by others.  I asked what office he was calling from and he said 1111 Constitution Avenue, Washington, DC.  He gave me to another guy named Michael Washington.  Somebody with an Indian accent named Michael Washington.  Right.  I guess he was adopted by missionaries.  Anyhow, he said that I had defrauded the IRS of $985 for the tax years 2008-2012 and that they had determined it was not a mistake but fraud.  Cited various laws and regulations I had "violated" including theft by deception.  Same threats of asset and passport seizure, informing my employer, and having the local police arrest me.

Got a call today from this number. Woman with very hard accept, maybe Jamaican or around that area. Told me that she is calling to let me know that the IRS is FILING A LAWSUIT AGAINST ME for TAX FRAUD, TAX EVASION, and WILLFUL AND INTENTIONAL LYING ON TAX DOCUMENTS. Without letting me respond started throwing threats at me, that the IRS is sending Sheriffs to my house in 2 hours, that I will be arrested on the spot, put in jail, denied bail because of the charge of fraud, and after a few days will go before the judge. While I wait in JAIL, the IRS will PUT A LIEN on my HOUSE, my CARS, freeze ALL MY BANK ACCOUNTS, freeze all my 401k accounts with my employer and notify my employer about the fraud lawsuit so they can fire me!  Said they will charge me over $42,000 for having to resolve this in the court.  But I can resolve it now, on the phone, and that will only cost me $1,985.
When I asked for any written verification of any action against me, of any info from IRS about what I have supposedly done, she told me that they - i.e. IRS - sent me 2 certified letters letting me know about the fraud I committed, and both times nobody was home so the letters were not signed for and thus returned to them.  This was supposed to be the reason for my forfeiting any other right to see what the charges are, what years supposedly they pertain to, and how they arrived at the charges and the amounts.  I told her it is RIDICULOUS because I AM DISABLED and thus ALWAYS HOME, so there was no way that the certified mail was undelivered, and also that if USPS tries to deliver certified mail requiring signature and nobody is home, they will at least leave a notice in the door about this, and ask for someone to be home next day, or to go to the post office and pick it up.  She then said that they tried to contact me, (repeated same song) on Feb 15 and Mar 15 this year.  But since I did not receive the letters, and was NOT HOME to receive them - that IT IS ON ME!!!  (AT this point I was almost certain it was a scam).
Then she repeated that if I don't want to be arrested in the next 2 hours and all the rest from above, SHE CAN SETTLE IT WITH ME RIGHT NOW OVER THE PHONE, for only $1.985.  (what a bargain, ha?)
All I need to do is give her my cell# so she can be with on the line all the time (If I hang up, this offer disappears, and I get arrested....). I told her I DO NOT HAVE a CELL PHONE, only a land line. She then said they (IRS) will have to go thru with the lawsuit because she needs to be with me on the line the whole time while I go to the bank and to HomeDepot for the vouchers - if I hang up at any time she sends the sheriffs to arrest me.   After some haggling she agreed to let me call her back after I fulfilled her instructions, which were:
    - go to HomeDepot, buy 'PayPower Reloaded Voucher' for the amount , but since they only go up to $500, I will need 4 of them, then come back home and call her so she can take the numbers and verification off the vouchers, and this way I will be cleared and my house cleared, and my cars cleared and I will not loose a job, and I will NOT HAVE TO BE DEPORTED. That settled it for me - I AM A CITIZEN, so trying to threaten me with deportation was a wrong move.
I also told her that since I am disabled, I can't get out of the house until my husband comes back home, after 4 PM.  She said it will be too late, so we go back to me getting arrested in 2 hours.  After my begging her for help she asked how much cash I had at home, so I do not have to go to the back.  I said $300 just to see where it leads.  She said OK, take that to HomeDepot, buy a voucher with it, and call her at this 844 number, so she can make a note in the system that I am going to pay the rest.  if I do not get it done today, I will lose EVERYTHING I'VE WORKED FOR all my life!
I asked her for her number to call back and her name - she said her name was Bobby Henslee, # 1-844-854-5524.
She then said she has to talk to her REVENUE supervisor to make sure it is all OK to only pay the $300 right now.  She came back on the phone after 3 min, I asked to talk to that same supervisor so I can find out what I' supposed to be paying for. She said THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS.  That she is 'on the limb for me' trying to help me stay out of jail, and nobody can know what she is doing, so I can't talk to the supervisor.  Also, I had to make sure that when they asked me at HomeDeport what the vouchers were for, I HAD TO SAY THEY WERE JUST FOR MY PERSONAL USE!!! Nobody could know they were for IRS because this will immediately cancel the settlement, sheriffs come home to arrest me, etc. Now I KNEW 100%  IT IS A SCAM.  But she would not let me go yet - she then appealed to my 'MOTHERLY SIDE'.  She said I WAS LIKE A MOTHER TO HER!! and that is why she is helping me, but NOBODY, NOBODY can know what WE ARE DOING!!  If I slip and tell anyone, even my husband, deal is off, sheriffs, ....etc..  And she is doing this because she can tell I'M A CHRISTIAN LADY.

So, people please BE VERY VIGILANT.  Her accent was the first giveaway, then some of my personal info did not match, and then when she demanded total secrecy, then you know something is definitely wrong.
I also verified that the vouchers that she told me to buy, called 'PayPower Reloaded' are basically an electronic way of recharging someone's credit or debit card, and it happens immediately after you buy it.
    BE CAREFUL.
Also, on CallerID her call came up as '011-911 NAME UNKNOWN'.

So I was at the bank this morning depositing my tax refund check (yes, really!) and I receive this call from a heavily-accented "Ted Mosby."  Same story...do I have a criminal attorney because I'm being sued for tax fraud. I told him to give me his contact information as. I was not in the appropriate place to discuss this. Got his badge and phone number. Googled the phone number and landed at this site. Scary that they actually succeed at this scam!

I got one of these calls today (7/18/2014) at 7:33AM from 844-854-5524. Somewith thick accent told me that they had a lawsuit on me for tax fraud. He knew several pieces of information about me which were correct. I told him I couldn't understand him and he said someone else would be calling me back in 10 minutes. No one ever called back. After speaking with friends and family members I realize it is obviously a scam.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I received two voice messages one on 8/7 and again on 8/9.  It was an Indian woman first her name was Debbie then Ida Washington.  She said there was a lawsuit in Federal court and to call this phone number.  Disconnected.  What can be done about this?

Ditto on not being at risk for suit for fraud--I'm on SSDI and the total I receive is under the amount I even have to report for taxes. In my case, Caller ID labeled the caller "Out of Area"--I consider those calls to be spammer scammer calls without even investigating. With that, I answered just long enough to hit #2 to let my CPR Callblocker (handy device that someone recommended here--you can get it from Amazon) disconnect and add the number to its list of blocked numbers.
