    These people are SCAMMERS!!!  They call and say you have defauleted on a payday loan (which i have not) and that they are in your area to serve a warrant they say they will be there in 1-3 hours.  They do not give you their number they give you the number of Goldman kessler Brown and a "case no"  when you call the number they try to get you make a payment.

    I called the number and asked for paperwork to prove thier allegations, they say they don't have it.  They say to contact Payday Advance.  I asked for the number they say that they cannot give me the number i need to look online.  I look on line ther is no such company.  This is the 2nd time this has happened they never showed up with my "warrant" last time and they wont this time either.

    I've been getting calls from a blocked number and they leave a voice mail saying they are serving me with papers with an officer and if I'm not at home or work they will issue a warrent for my arrest. They leave this phone number with a case number. They've done the same thing in the last a few times and nobody ever shows up. The one time I did call the number back they told me what companies I allegedly had payday loans through. So After hanging up I googled both payday companies and found out the companies aren't even licensed to do payday loans in the state I live.

    Received a voicemail message on my cell phone that there are returned items from my bank and this is a legal matter and I must contact them immediately at 844-874-3463 (the number on caller id was 754-444-3948), and to reference and "account number'.  I'm not calling them back.  I know I don't have any returned items from bank, and after looking at the above posts I can tell they are a scam.  So scary!  Too bad these people can't be stopped, I am sure they are taking advantage of people with their scare tactics.

    I received the same message on my phone. I looked up the phone number and found this forum! Thank you, everyone for calming my nerves... as I get super scared easily! I called back just to make sure, did not give any information and was told I have a "payday loan that needs attention, one of your checks bounced when you tried to make a payment." I told this lady, Andrea Latemtio that I do not have a loan out from there... and she insisted that I do and that I can settle it now for $2,695. WOW. I said no way, and she said, "well then you need to have your attorney call me or you will have a warrant for your arrest." I asked her for more information and she went ballistic!!! I asked her for their address and she was about to give it to me, but then she goes, "You know what.. you want to go to jail, then that's on you, if not, have your attorney call me." Then she hangs up. Not going to lie, she got me shook up!!! These scammers now a days are getting too real for me.

    Does anybody know what I can do to crack down on them? Can I call the police or anything for being threatened like this?! It's so ridiculous!

    Report them to the FTC. They have already filed suit against three rogue debt collectors this month alone, and another one won't. hurt.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    Thank you so much! I am writing a complaint right now.

    Additional information regarding my phone call with "Andrea Lotemtio" from Goldman, Kessler and Brown:

    I forgot to mention, when I was trying to ask for their information and find out whatever it is I owe, I wasn't able to move forward unless I verify my information.  I tried lying about it, but she caught me. She said, "I know your social security number, just give me one digit." I gave her one and she recited my ssn to me, it was correct, but I said, "No, that's not it, may I please get your information before we move any further?!" She kept saying on and on how she will give me all the info I want, unless I confirm my identity because it's personal information she has for me.

    For future reference, how can I get information from them without giving away mine?! It is definitely scary how they have this information.

    I am pretty sure this debt collector isn't real. They are claiming to be a firm. I asked them if I may have their website, or something to prove to me that they're real... Andrea kept saying, "No! Why do I have to give you information if you're not giving me yours?!" I don't think debt collectors are allowed to treat you so rude, let alone, a law office/firm!

    ***UPDATE***

    I received a call from a Crystal Pain again, this time instead of an anonymous phone number, it was an actual court office in my area.  (I googled it after I hung up with her, but it turns out it was just the court's fax number. I even tried calling them back... just fax sounds through the phone).

    Crystal Pain called, asking for me... I didn't confirm my identity and replied, "Who's THIS?!" And she said that she's calling to see why my account was put on hold.  I said to her, "I am confused and don't know what is going on.... what are you saying?!"  She replies, "It shows you talked to the firm the other day, and they put your account on hold, do you know why? Do you want their phone number again?"  I said, "Actually, my attorney said not to speak with any of you because this is a scam." She replied with, "Well, your records will be sent back to the court and an officer will be picking you up at your location. Good luck to you." I said nicely, "Cool, I'll be waiting." END.

    So, I'm sitting here at work, a little pissed off because I'm being harassed and threatened, but also... thinking.... what can I do to crack down on these people?!?!?!?!?! Scammers!!!! I can't imagine how they sleep at night...

    >> what can I do to crack down on these people <<

    Probably not much, if they faked their phone number / address / etc.

    Here are two pages of links to (mostly government) sites in Canada and the USA were you can report those scams, or learn more about them.

    Look here first:

    I received a "Private Caller" phone called today from Nicole Tarentino of Kessler & Brown lawfirm in New York, New York.  She knew my social security number, all my bankruptcy information (including my lawyers name), previous bank information and an old email account number.

    She claimed that while the payday loan was covered in my bankruptcy, that the debt itself was forgiven, but that the check bounced and they could pursue charges for check fraud based solely on the bounced check.  Because the check amount was $270, she stated that under the law, they could claim two times that amount, plus bank fees, bringing the total to $570.  When I asked why they were just now informing me of this two years later, she said that this was now a legal matter and that I hadn't responded to previous phone calls (which I hadn't because those phone calls were coming from individuals who were obviously calling from their homes with kids playing in the background; not official sounding at all).

    She told me that I had to pay at least half by 8pm today and that the other half could be set up as a separate payment based on whatever was convenient for me.  She stated payment would be made through my debit card (first red flag).  At this point, I was freaked out, but still got her contact information (1-844-874-3463) and then she told me my case number.  I told her I would be calling my lawyer and getting back to her soon.

    I called my lawyer who informed me that this is a typical scam.  He looked up the law firms information and surprise, surprise, it doesn't exist.  I tried looking up the law firm myself online and couldn't find anything (other than this site and similar reports on ripoffreport.com -  thank goodness!).  I filed a complaint with the FTC now that I have a name and phone number.  These types of scams are usually escalating situations; when the minor phone solicitors can't get you to pay, they bring out Nicole, who seems like an aggressive, informed lawyer and scares you into paying.  I'm glad I called my lawyer and never gave them a dime.
