    The same thing just happened to me. The only difference is, they said I had an old cell phone bill that I didn't pay.  Totally bogus!! They said if we didn't pay $157.00 they were gong to serve me with papers and I would have to pay over 4k in court cost. This is a scam.

    I got one today but they called my sisters place of work!!! How do they get that info? Claiming I had an unpaid phone bill in a place I didn't live at the time under a name I don't use and sent to an address I never lived at. They threatened to freeze my assets and follow me around for the next 10years. So I called said "phone" company and spike with their real legal department and they had no clue who I was. And when I called the fake number back and told them they had no legal right to call my family at their work, they would get sued, he started yelling at me. I was also informed by a lawyer that there is a statute of limitations for all debt. If no action is taken in that time frame for that state, they will NEVER  be able to sue or harass you after the limitation is expired. Check your state for limitations.

    LTS also operates using 844-643-6615.  Please see all comments related to that number to see more info about it being a scam.  We received a phone call from LTS Associates claiming we owed money to Wells Fargo back from years ago.  They threatened to garnish our wages and pull us into court unless we paid them since there was a civil suit against us.  Ours followed the same process as MLG under the 844-643-6615 number and all the others.  She wanted a debit card or banking information.  She said if I didn't feel comfortable providing that, we needed to provide a number for a prepaid loadable card.  I was so upset until we contacted Wells Fargo.  They had no record of this and warned us to make sure you ask for "proof of debt."  I asked for it twice and I got the runaround.  Finally, I saw all these sites (thank you God!).  I called back and told them that they are required to show "proof of debt" and that all over the internet it says they are committing fraud and to never call me ever again.  I plan on reporting them to the FTC as well.  Apparently, they also operate via other phone numbers such as 844-882-4631.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
