Received a call and was told I needed to be home Monday to sign papers to go to court, or I was to call John Reese at 855-353-2598.  I did cal and he told me  owed interest on a card from 2007.  I told him the card was paid off long ago and he
got a bit annoyed. He said he had sent letters about it, which he did not.
I felt like this was a scam, and now I know it is.

Looks like he is using the name of a TV character on "Person of Interest".

It is incumbent upon them to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it.  Not the other way around.
This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

I just received a message at my job from Jim Jenson from County State Processor and to call John Reese back at 877-493-6877 and left a case number., My heart started raising because I have no idea what someone could be filing charges for. I left messages and there was no response. Really weird. I wonder what kind of scam is going on?

I received a call from 855 563 1119, regarding my son and was told, my son must call back and it was urgent regarding a missed trial date or papers would be filed. I asked my son about this and he did not know anything about it.  I got another call today stating the same thing.  My son is ignoring the call, I'm sure it is a scam

Yup, I got this same call the other day. A "Michael Rivera". They also called my sister, my parents house phone AND my work! Saying that if I didn't respond in 24 hours, then a lawsuit would be filed but he didn't want to cause a scene and disrupt the work place by having to show up at my work. Well, I freaked out and call the guy back today. He proceeded to tell me that the case closed yesterday because paperwork was delivered to me. I said UH NO, I didn't receive any. So then from there, he goes back and says well this is from a credit card from 2006 (mind you, TEN YEARS AGO!) from Desert Schools. I told him I was 17 at the time and did not have a credit card with them ever. Only a car loan that is PAID off. He then said well you will need to contact the bank and verify with them and then call me back and let me know what it is and we can resolve from there. I asked for further information as to why 10 years later, how much, when was it filed and why I never received any formal documents or Desert Schools trying to resolve it? He proceeds to tell me well you owe $1400 and I am only a mediator so I don't have that info but you need to call them and then call me right back. SOOOOO I sat on the phone being transferred between Desert Schools for over an hour (during work) and NO ONE can find anything delinquent on me. The last person I spoke to (credit card member collections) states that I DID have a credit card in 2006 but it was paid off, it shows OPEN but it is not active nor has a balance and I am not delinquent in ANYTHING with them. Also, I decided to check my credit report while on eternal hold and NOTHING is in collections under Desert School and/or showing up from 2006. I decided not to call the guy back because obviously this is a SCAM and I am going to report to all I can.

Your first problem is that you went to all that effort to prove that you don't owe the debt.  They have to to prove that you do owe the debt and thant they have the right to collect on it.  A 10 year old debt was probably out of the Statute of Limitations so they wouldn't legally be able to sue you.  Further, if you were 17, then you were not legally responsible for any debt incurred.

It sounds to me like you need to educate yourself so that you don't fall victim to this type of crime.  Oh and they can call themselves anything they want (mediator is popular with these type crooks) but they must still follow the FDCPA, even if they claim to be lawyers.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.

Ignore and block the call.  Do not return the call.  Do not give them any information.  If someone says you owe them money, demand a debt vallidation be sent you by US mail.  E-mail no good.   Of course they won't do this, so simply ignore and block the number.

Received several calls within the past 3 weeks from different people @ 855-415-4519 stating to be from a Jonathan Reece attorneys office. I had read up on some of these forums before our conversation and asked for a validation letter, and the address from where their office was located. I was given 4408 Milestone street, suite 129, Blasdell, NY 14219. Guy calling claimed to be a Jonathan Harris associate to John Reece. He would settle my account for $500 but only if I paid today. If not the fee went to $1400 from an original debt of $525. If they had to bring me to court that would go up to possibly 5k. I got off the phone and Googled the address to find a strip Plaza and no atty office in the area, in fact none in response to his name either. How do these people get so much information?
