I'm usually very skeptical about receiving these kinds of letters in the mail, but the letter had Merrill Lynch's logo, address and my place of employment that I had a 401k with.  It looked legit.  I called the 2766 number and I didn't want to give my social, maybe just the last 4 digits. I was told they needed the whole thing.  I gave my social out.  After verifying some information, I was told the check would be mailed out.  Cool.  Now right after the phone call, I had a pit in my stomach like I just gave my info to a scammer.  I did a reverse look-up.  There was as much good reviews as bad reviews to if indeed it was a scam.  I then called Merrill Lynch with the 7455 number from their website.  After hearing that indeed, letters had been sent out to try and find clients to give them their money, I was feeling better. Also, the phone call that I had earlier could been seen in their system and with whom I talked to and at what time. It's legit, at least in my case.  Check is in the mail.

It's a good idea to be paranoid, but this is not a scam.  The phone number is ML, and the letter that I received is legit.  I am surprised that they need your entire social though, they should know better than to ask people for their full social.

The number is legitimate. I am with Merril Lynch on the phone right now, it's 401k distribution number, sent a letter about uncashed check. ML just told me distribution division always requires a full SS number but it is legit, gave another number to call 800 228 4015. Nothing to worry about.

This is legit. I got the letter today and called Merril-Lynch through another number provided by myemployer's benefits administrator and had them transfer me to the appropriate department and confirmed that there was in fact an expired uncashed check sent to me back in July that I did not get, so they are re-issuing it and mailing it to me.

Why don't you people do some research and try going to Merrill lynch's official 401kl website and get a number you know to be true and call that one. Call them and If there is a check you can get it. If you don't trust that website then get off the internet because you won't trust anything you see on here. There is real checks out there and there is scammers that have their own letters.

Allison smith is overly paranoid and spreading lies herself about true information. yes there are fraud and scams out there, but this specific phone and dept is ML and them trying to get you to get your money to you. If you do not this money eventually goes to the state of the address they have on file.

" If you do not this money eventually goes to the state of the address they have on file."  Where you would also then get it without any extra costs such as broker fees.  So, assuming you are what your screen name says you are, which I doubt, why did you look up your employer's number?

    Not a scam

It's not a scam.  I got a letter in the mail for an important notice, and found that I had a check reissuance.  Called the 18552142766 and spoke to Andrew, he did in fact ask for ss#, address, and DOB.  I got my check 5 days later for the amount of $772.65.  Just in time for holidays.  However, the phone rep was able to verify my job and I had a 401k there.  Made me feel better.
