    Not Falling For This
Received a call from a private number.  Caller said his name is Shane Carlton and he was a compliance officer with my county and he was contacting me to notify me that a claim was getting ready to be filed against me and that I needed to contact the agency filing the claim to to prevent the claim from being filed. I had a similar call from a woman named Mary a couple of years ago who tried the same thing. So I gave the man a few choice words, told him he was a scammer and told him to stop calling and hung up. A call immediately followed from a private number again and I didn't answer. He left a voice mail and said if I didn't respond, the agency would file the claim and I'd be service a warrant at my home or place of employment. The message cut off mid-sentence. I blocked all calls coming from blocked numbers. He then called back with the phone number showing as all zeros. He again left a voicemail stating that the was my final verbal warning via phone call and since I won't respond, the claim is going to be filed. He then said if I contacted the filing agency before they filed the claim and provided needed information, I can prevent the filing. He said to call the agency at 855-220-2387 and refer to claim #118-6551 as he had no informationon details of the claim. He then contacted one of my relatives and again stated his name was Shane Carleton and he was a compliance officer with my county trying to reach me. He left no contact phone number. My family member called me and I told him the man was a scammer and he probably got his name and phone number off some public record from some website and now he is going to be harassed. Fortunately my relative was smart enough not to give this scammer any of my information.

Got a call from 817-539-6553. They claimed to be a part of Denton's County office and were calling about my sister having a claim filed against her, blah blah blah. Said i needed to call 855-220-2387 to do something about the claim. I honestly stopped listening.

I didn't actually answer the call, it was just a voicemail.

I got a voice mail from Britney (I can't get the last name because she was talking so fast). She said that they are filing a claim against my daughter ( mention her name and told me to call 855-220-2387 to stop the claim being filed or they will serve the claim at my address.  She left voice mail message two days in a row now. I was going to call this person back to tell her to stop calling. But since I read it here, I'll just ignore it. thanks!

Received a call from a local number. Liam or Leon Weis left a message  that a claim had been filed against me and gave me reference number. He said if I called the filer immediately at 855-220-2387  they could stop the claim. He called again today. On the message, he said this was my final warning and they knew who I was, where I lived and my place of business. He again told me to call 855-220-2387 and the reference number. He said they would get me and this was my final notice. At the end of both messages he said my first and last name and said best of luck.

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them so that they can scare that person into paying extortion money.  They will usually also state information that would be illegal for a real debt collector to state to department and tell them that you are a deadbeat who does not pay their bills. They often call people that have never even been a third party such as that you are being sued, that you owe money to someone, etc. They threaten that if you do not call them back, they will contact your HR associated with you because they get erroneous information off the internet.

The fake process server/location finder extortion SCAM usually consists of the following:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency. They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer). They threaten to serve you at home or at work. They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work. They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID. None of which is true. Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them. Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else. They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”. Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time. Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

They leave extremely threatening voicemails on your phone saying they’re going to sue you through your county, when you call them they won’t give you any information, and when you refuse to cooperate they curse you out and hang up. They called themselves Securian, but the only info I could find was an insurance and financial company..

Thank you for this reassuring message. They called a relative of mine and somehow found my number that isn’t even in my name or any public records. They continue to threaten action against me through my county and call themselves “Securian”..
