Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
— filed under: Press Release
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - DixborokidThese folks are gonna get shot if they keep [***] pestering me!
- cinaminThey keep calling and never leave a message
- irritatedThey keep calling my job with an automated message stating they need a statemenr from me or my lawyer to release me from charges today. They have been calling for over a month now. Come on people you don't get a warning when you are going to get served papers.
- Caller: reliant group
- Cynthia Ladd| 3 repliesI've received several calls from this phone number with a recording stating that they are looking for my husband's niece, and if I am not her, then to hang up. This doesn't stop the calls, so just now I stayed on the phone and listened to the entire message which demanded "a statement from you or your attorney today to release you from this matter." They identify themselves as Reliant Group, and leave a call back number of 855-233-4163. Whoops..as I'm writing this they are calling me again. What can I do to stop these harassing calls? We're on the federal do not call list already.
- Caller: Reliant
- Bren replies to Cynthia LaddThey keep calling me for my brother in law. He doesn't even know my phone number so I have no idea why they keep calling.
- EG| 1 replyThis is a debt collector. They collect for all kinds of outstanding debts. My call was for a payday loan but they collect for many types of accounts. If they are calling and this doesn't apply to you...some how you are connected to the account in some way, either as a reference to contact if they couldn't find the account holder. They wont stop calling until the original account holder deals with this. They use scare tactics (litigation, etc) to get you to pay. Just ask for verification of debt and send a certified cease and desist...or to only contact you in writing...as you decide how to proceed with this. There isn't a debtors jail, there isn't a person coming to get you...most cases they won't pursue you if it's under 999 as it's not cost effective. It will stop the calls...but be prepared for it to get resold and it will start over again in time.
- pbet| 2 repliesCalling my cell 3 to 4 times daily since August 2014. Now left message to have me or my lawyer contact Reliant Group at 855-233-4163 with case #57416. Then message said this was for Reginald Wallace and if I was not him to disregard the message. I am not Reginald Wallace. I will not call the number but don't know how to stop the calls. My phone is set to block calls from that number.
- Caller: Reliant Group
- Call type: Debt collector
- Alfalfa replies to pbetThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - JcThey are scammers!! They would not provide any company information. If they really were going to serve you, the attorney's contact information would be on the court documents. And, what if you wanted to mail a check??? Such BS!
- Caller: Reliant
- Call type: Debt collector
- NoneSince I ignore these calls, they eventually give up. Never give them any info since they are trying to collect on something no one else has been able to do. Good luck A++holes!
- ReadguysSpoke to them and even had my bankruptcy attorney call them. Who they promptly hung up on. Glad to see finally law enforcement is going after these people.
http://www.foxbusiness.com/economy-policy/201 ... ctors-epidemic/ - JwThis is never ending. I have dealt with many of these people before. Reliant group is a a joke. Tell these mofos to get a real job and stop bothering people that actually work for a living. Or if you have a little extra time for a good laugh or two.. waste their time by dragging out the phone call. i do it when i can but it always ends with a big f you and a report to the appropriate government officials
- GENERALI have received 3 phone calls today from 855-233-4163. There is no message, but static. Do not return a call back to them. from my notes in 2013, they are another 3rd party, robo scammer.
