I got this number in a scam letter about a data breach for hunting licenses. I haven't had a license for 40 yrs. They want info to monitor my credit!

We also received that letter and were equally skeptical, especially since we hadn't been issued a fishing license in over 20 years.  I did, however, research the issue and found that the report was valid.  To see for yourself, just do a search such as "fishing license breach" and you'll get many hits, including those from the official ".gov" sites of the affected states and many major television news departments.  Alternately, you could contact the licensing department of your particular state to confirm the letter's veracity.

Apparently, a criminal calling him- or herself "Mr. High" was the perpetrator, and the breach affected those who obtained a license before 2007.

If you're not comfortable using the offered credit monitoring service, you could still get your free annual credit report and safeguard yourself that way - I know we will!

I include this example only because it contains an image of the Active Outdoors letter, in case you discarded your copy - I completely understand if you don't click on it, and am sure your state's licensing department could give you the information.
