    called re: a family member.  naming me as a person of interest related to the family members case.  Caller advised that I was used during the loan application process and a balance is outstanding.  The caller asked for my number (not given) and advised that we would be liable for attorneys fees and court cost. The caller was advised that this was absurd as I have never been or authorized anyone to use me as a co-applicant  /cosigner. The caller proceeded to advise that the bank is owed and they are trying to collect the debt.  Later contacted that family member the caller referenced and was advised that there are no outstanding balances.  I believe the call to BS

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I just received a recorded phone call from a "Melissa" who said that my tenant was a person of interest in an ongoing matter.  I returned the phone call and said that they had contacted the rental office of the person named and to take the rental office phone number off their records.  I also said that she lived here but did not live in the rental office.

    I just got a call from Melissa at Western Portfolio Management stating I was a person of interest in a case. I have been recently been getting calls from another company (stating they are a resolution company) and threatened pending legal action. I did not return their calls and now I get Melissa. She called me from 704-200-2394 which is a NC number and the previous calls were from Mooresville, NC. How convenient! They are either trying to collect on a bogus debt or one that is so old that they legally can't collect on anymore. Block the numbers! Don't return the calls!

    Started receiving recorded phone calls from this number last week concerning a "case number".  They call rentlessly.  Received another call first thing this past Monday morning so decided to call back and find out what it was about.  Spoke with "Greg Anderson", (probably not his real name) and he informed me that the call was concerning a credit card that went into collections back in 2001.  Settled the debt directly with the bank in 2005, but I think they had already sold the debt to a collection agency.  After payment, the charge off came off of my credit report.  Anyway, "Greg" told me that they were going to go to the District Attorney's office and file this claim against me.  I informed him that the debt had been settled, that his company had purchased a bogus debt, I wouldn't admit or deny any culpability, that his company was harassing me and if they did not cease immediately, I was going to report them to the FTC and the Texas State Attorney General.  Haven't heard from them since.

    You might have to get a call blocker.  Report them to your local authorities that deal with debt collection.

    Your caller is a scammer.  Sorry, but a voice mail (or email, fax or phone call) is NOT "official notice" of anything.  Please do report your caller to the FTC, FBI and your state's Attorney General.

    Melissa Stanford or her associates calls our company every 2-5 days and leaves messages for some that no longer works here. We made every attempt to remove our number but it does not work. This has been going on for quite some time.

    I got a call from these people say I need to call them back, same message as everyone else. So I got the "call recorder" app and call them back. The first rude lady told me I need to drop my attitude because I owe money she don't (lol). Then when I told  her to explain it to me of who I owe and when was it closed. She claim I owe 5/3 $530 from an account from 2010. I was oversea from 2008-2011 and they last time I had a 5/3 account was a savings when I was 16. When I explain that to the ignorant woman she go mad and hung up (very professional), So I call back again was put on hold for 10mins (i guess they need to get they story straight). Another ignorant employee male this time get on the phone telling me i need to pay a bill they have no proof of, I ask him, If I owed 5/3 anything wouldnt it be on my credit report, the idiot said 'no'. I ask for the bank account number from 5/3 they didnt have it, I ask them to verify they address they have on file for me he said "we dont have your address" then I told him to lose my number or I will sue. They both was well aware I was recording the phone call. Just like his co-worker he got mad and hung up......havent heard from them since. If you want them to stop calling you here what u need to do

    1. call them back and let them know the call is being recorded for legal purposes (even if its not they cant tell)
    2. ask them for the account and phone number from the original company they claim that u owe, so that u can verify that u owe money (dont worry they wont have a real number for either)

    *at this point they usually get mad and hang up, if they do call back tell them u have the previous conversation recorded and if they call again u will sue, again they will claim u still owe but they will make it a point to say they will not call u anymore (just make sure u tell them the phone call is recorded)

    I havent heard from them since.

    I received a call requesting that I call this number. When I called back I spoke to Ms. Gibson who happen to be very rude. I gave her the claim number that I was given but refused to give my phone number, she then put me on hold but before doing so made sure that I heard her saying "I don't know why she's being so difficult". I hung up and called back and got her again, again she was very rude to me since I refuse to give my phone number. She then said that she refused to work with me yet she's the one trying to collect money from me. I have tried to correct this in the past since it's not even my name that they are looking for. I am pretty certain that this is all a scam.
