I got a window on my computer telling me it is infected and I should call this number.  I did.  A fellow with a strong accent answer saying he was with Windows Technical Support.  He wanted me to type in "hh h" in the window run box.  That brings up a browser so he can have to connect with another site which will help him take remote control of your computer.  Don't do it.  It is a scam.

I was on-line and got a big red malware message with an ominous voice telling me that my computer was infected and to call some customer support number. I have had this happen before and I know that is the the LAST thing I should do. I wrote down the number so I could trace and report it. (That's how I got here). I rebooted my computer and will see if it returns. The last time I called my own TRUSTED local IT guy, and he talked me through removing the threat. He said there was never an actual threat, just an ominous message to get you to call the scammer.

This just happened to me. Did you recover your computer? I think mine crashed. I didn’t know and called 😔

Same thing just happened to me.  I smelled a rat but did call the number.  The number was associated with something generic like "Support."  When a person answered I asked for the name of the company.  They told me "Microsoft Support" and I said I would call them back if I decided I needed to.  Within the next couple of minutes the same guy I had spoken with called me! ... and asked me what had happened (i.e. to my computer.)  I told him I wasn't sure if the whole thing was a scam or not and that I was doing some research.  I repeated would call back if needed.  He hung up, no argument.   My research brought me here; thanks, everyone, for your helpful comments!

Large red screen popped up with malware warning not to reboot, shut down or anything but that I had to call the number on the screen to the Microsoft Windows support 855 334 3967
I tried contacting the real Microsoft Windows and could never get past the damn virtual agent! So much for that!!
So I checked online via my phone for the number and this popped up first thing!
I plan on reporting it to the FTC - I hope you will too.

Just got this and it's pretty obvious it is a scam.  So what steps did your IT guy tell you to follow to remove the threat?

Just tan Malwarebytes on hubby’s computer. Removed it.

All of the examples I have just read tracks with my experience.  After the message came up on my screen I called the toll free number (with a great deal of suspicion) and spoke to the individual for several minutes.  The dialect sounded middle eastern or Indian.  Bottom line he almost had me convinced that my protection (Webroot) was not compatible with my operating system.  But when he wanted me to allow him to remotely control my computer to provide support I told him I would get back to him.  IT IS A SCAM!!!  Just once I would love to get my hands on one of these mendacious poltroons....

1. Move cursor to bottom of screen, 2 rt click mouse 3 click Task Manger 4 click browser name 5 click end task to close browser
6 To remove this hung big red malware: un-install browser(check to see if you need to redo all your personal setting on the browser) 7 re-install browser
After I did above, big red malware message do not come back to me any more.

The same thing others have reported. I got rid of the pop up Thru task manager and rebooted. Never allow someone to remote access your computer.
