Days her name is Joyce Howard calling about a filed delivery and for me to call them back or action will be taking on me. Is this a light business?

From what I can tell, it's an attempt to collect on a debt that no longer appears on my credit report. They are hoping to collect on a charge that's been written off, and I am no longer responsible for. I pay for extensive credit report monitoring, so I am sure this is not legit.

Same story here. The "debt" (closed out more than six years ago). Guy starts yelling over me that they are done trying to collect and will collect from garnishments via the legal process......at an old job that I no longer work at. I would say it's 100% OK to disregard. Side note, they blocked my number and just hang up on me when I try a different line.

Called me about suing me over a hospital visit at a hospital that I haven't been to since 1997 and his date was Dec 2006 when I lived in Florida for school. Wouldn't give me a straight answer, I even tried to get him to send a certified letter so I could have a glimmer of some type of proof it was real, kept repeating settle up today and send us (A random invisible company) money or we will file suit. Made the bad mistake of giving him my last 4 because he had my name and address, feel a little stupid now. Luckily I don't use that number for anything. Wish there was a place that will go after places like that, just stealing money and peoples information. Should be a serious offense for that BS

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

If you feel your SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS.  Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039):
