They called from a no caller Id number telling me to call 855-415-5588 and give me a reference number that they could tell me more about the call and when I did call the 855 number and give them the reference number that’s when he started telling me that I owed 2100 but would settle for 700 if I send them 185 by tomorrow and the rest by 5/17/19 but would not take a money order the only way they would take a money order is if I paid it all in full and told me if I did not they would see me in court I really think it’s a scam and just stick it out and see if I get a letter to go to court told me my address and the last 4 of my ss#

This number called me in April 2019 telling me I owe $2800+ but would settle for 1600 with paying $350 friday and $100 monthly. Didnt really tell me who he was with, besides Newman and associates,  months later after I made few payments,  I missed some, he threatened me with court, was rude, and then said it's a debt from 2007-2009 from citi bank, um I was 15!  How tf would I have a credit card???? Then he said I have court a wk later.. been 2 months... still have not received nothing for court!

So some stranger called you up, claimed you owed money and you simply went ahead and paid them instead of making them prove that you owed it and that they had the legal right to collect it?  Well your only recourse now is to sue them to get your money back and then some.  Oh, and by the way, you are now on the suckers list and every other crooks will now be calling you claiming that you owe a debt.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Voicemail saying I needed to call 855 415 5588 regarding some complaint. The strange part is the voice mail went to daughter in law's best friend's phone who I've never met! Didn't call the number and blocked them on my phone.
