Received call from private number, I did not pick up to answer and they left a VM message for my son to return call regarding "complaint" being filed against him and this was their final attempt to avoid legal action.  Caller was a female who obviously was reading from a script who left this number to call a long with a bogus case number.
Since I worked for the county I have knowledge that they don't make calls like that...they do send official written notice so I know this is a scam or a bill collector.

Received a call from this number too.  They said it was for my sister who had medical work at NJ hospital more than 10 years ago, and that if they did not hear from her they would seek judgement.  When I questioned this and asked if it was a scam or if they were bill collectors, they said they were a "legal" law firm.  What do we have to do about this?

Received a call. I returned the call and it was completely bogus. They tried to get my address and social security #, I refused, and they finally gave up by skipping straight to "You owe $1200 for a past hospital visit".

They have harassed my entire family with phone calls saying they have been trying to serve me papers and have not been able to get in contact with me. The address they gave me is an address from college over 7 years ago. They have my entire family’s phone numbers and call and text all of us back to back with the same script and “time sensitive information” and legal action will be taken if i do not respond and they will have to make a decision without my consent.
Total [***]. Gave me a fake case number too. Don’t fall for it.

Yup.  Scam.  Justin Cobb, PSP called my sons phone.  Left the number of 866-413-0429. Using fear to prompt a conversation. If only people took the time to research online before making a return call.  Folks like these need to be added and then drained with the swamp.

Same song and dance and the rude lady kept saying she was writing me up for a refusual when I told her she could send a registered letter to my PO box when she said signature required.  I know I have old debt I would be more than happy to take care of but when they refuse to tell me who this is for etc. and then hang up on me - it's hard to do anything.

That is easy to accomplish.  You pay the creditor to whom you owe the bill.  You should know who that is and you should know how much you owe them.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
