- Dylan| 5 repliesGot a call from them saying my wife was being served regarding an old debt. They told her that she was in danger of failure to appear. They also contacted my sister in law and disclosed details to her. In subsequent phone calls they have claimed to be a law firm and also pre litigation. They have used the names Legal Claim Services and Legacy Group LLC. Do not pay!! Their tactics scared my wife while she was home with our newborn son. The scam cost us $1,800 before we got wise.
- jeff replies to Dylan| 1 replySo is it a total fraud or was this a true court case?
- Alfalfa replies to jeffThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - Wondering if this is real? replies to Dylan| 1 replyWhat ended up happening? Just received this call at my mothers house that I have not lived at in 9 years it came up on caller ID as child and family services but gave this number and when I called claimed they would serve me if I didn't pay
- MJG replies to Wondering if this is real?Did you receive anything IN WRITING???? This is a scam to extort money from you. Please read Alfalfa's comments above your post.
- ChaseCalled my mothers house from a number that showed up as child and family services but gave another number to call. When I called they claimed I was going to be served court papers if I didn't pay. The debt claimed was from 2004. Had nothing to do with child and family services, they kept implying I had two options, to either go to court and be responsible for court fees and attorney fees or make arrangement to pay

- YoYep received same call from old address, they have my husbands number too, already reported this up, seems their scam won't last long. Didn't state what was in the envelope, but said they needed to drop some papers off.
- Caller: No Caller ID
- LalJust received this call stating that "Ignoring their calls would not make the debt disappear" and that I will be served a complaint if I do not return their call. Did NOT state what it was for but gave a complaint #. I know I owe some bills, but this literally scared me. The lady was so scary on the message. Then, my dad (whom I have not lived with since 2006) said they called HIS number and left a message saying my attorney must call them, etc. Any advice?
They left this call back number and a name (Paris Foster) and NO ID of what company they worked for.- Call type: Debt collector
- Matt| 1 replyCalled them back. Asked what this was about. Said debt I'm not positive about from years ago. Said an attorney was in court filing a summons for me. Said couldn't give the debt contact information but could contact them while on the phone. I said well I wait for the court to contact me.

- Jay| 1 replyYes received a phone call at work from Robert Stone about a summon he was going to serve. Left a number to reschedule document summons. After research and reading other complaints it's a scam. Even gave a case number. When I called back it was some guy name Ortiz was handling everything. Don't get caught up. The address belong to a UPS pick up and delivery.

- Bobby Tables replies to JayCalled my county's court to see how full of crap these guys were. Absolutely no cases with my name.
I've done collections before and I would have been fired on the spot for the all the laws these guys are breaking. No legitimate collection company would do this, especially with how hard the consumer financial protection bureau has been coming down on the industry lately. These crooks are con artists. - Bobby Tables replies to MattThey have to provide all of their contact information when requested. Moreover, they also need to provide their company name, the callers name or state registered alias. They would go out of business really quickly if they were a real collections agency with all of the lawsuits they would be subject to.
- Bobby Tables replies to DylanDo a charge back if you paid by credit card. You should be able to recover the money.
- NicholeYup, same thing just happened to me! Go two calls from 'No Caller ID'. First time, no message- second time, I answered. Indian woman from a Legal Services agency told me that they had tried twice to serve me at an address I recently moved from. She said if I don't accept the third time, it could be considered 'failure to appear'. She sounded surprised that I had not received any paperwork 30 days prior to their serving me. She gave me a reference # and told me to call WFGN and Associates. I called, and he said I owed $3,500. He offered to call CitiFinancial (the debtor) on conference call bc we would be unable to reach them directly. I said I needed to speak with my attorney, as I was not home and needed to refer to my legal records for this 9+ year old debt. I was told I had yesterday and today to get this resolved to avoid additional legal fees. I looked up the phone number and came upon this thread. Sure enough, after calling Oscar (with WFGN) back, he gave me the address (linked with UPS!!!) and there was no case # bc it wasn't public records yet, or something. I spoke to my father, an Attorney, who confirmed this as a scam, and I will be calling the Attorney Generals office, after this posting. Be careful!!!

- LauraThis "company" has called me more than once looking for someone I have never heard of that has the same last name. I told them this the previous time they called my cell phone and told them to take my number off their list. A man left a message today implying some sort of litigation if this Douglas person I do not know did not respond. Irritated that they are still calling my number, I returned the call. A woman answered "Corporate Headquarters." I told her to again quit calling this number. She says "we thought this person was potentially a relative." I said that's like assuming everyone by the last name of Jones is related. She got incredibly short and hung up the phone. I called back to get her name and this "company's" address and she refused any information telling me that I was harassing her. She began yelling. I told her I was recording the call (I wasn't but it was fun to say). She yells back saying I didn't have permission and good luck with that in court. Charming young lady.
- Caller: Will not identify themselves
- OctaviaThis number keeps on calling me and threatening that I need to give them money that I sopposedly owe. This is not the first time, they have token $250 before. Now there asking for $500.
- Call type: Debt collector
- AnnaI have been receiving these calls for a month and they have also called my husband. They have very old information and say I owe from a debt last paid on 6 years ago. Said they were making 3rd attempt to deliver papers. I told them to go ahead because it was a very old address. I have had 3 different ladies call me. The last one was 714-453-1953 from Ava Garcia. She gives a file number and says if I don't call back today they will go ahead and proceed with file.. I have calls from debt collectors and this is very fishy. Anyone trying to get a hold of me would at least have half my information correct.
