- Steve Maver| 6 repliesToday I just got back from being out of town for business, and came home to a few messages from a restricted number. A Adam Levi left a message about some paper work i needed to be served, and to call 8555734876 if i wanted to schedule a good time for him to stop by. I called and was transferred over to a "Mediation Services" legal department. The representative i talked to seemed very well informed, and told me that I had an outstanding loan for $1700 from an online loan company. This was a shock to me, as I've always been very good at managing my finances. I was very skeptical at first, I was almost sure this was a scam. However the representative, I think his name was Andy, had all my information and told me what the situation was. The $1700 comes from all the years of interest, as well as attorney fee's and court costs. He told me that if i wish, I could settle this out of court, for the original sum of $800. I told him i'd rather settle out of court and we talked out a payment plan. While I was hitting myself for forgetting a loan like that, Andy made it very easy and very financially convenient for me to get it paid off. I highly suggest calling that number if you receive any calls like the ones i got. Better to do everything outside of court, in my experience.
- Turnip Truck replies to Steve Maver| 2 repliesYeah, right. Complete and utter baloney. I have learned after reading numerous comments that shills usually post under a phony, generic first and last name-like "Steve Maver"- to try to convince others this is a factual post. The majority of legit commenters use screen names or nicknames. First, most bottom feeders use the totally generic "Mediation Services" when some unsuspecting person makes the mistake to call them back. Second, on-the-level process servers do not call and ask you when is a good time to be served. Nice try, moron. But I think the only one you're fooling is yourself.

- Nick replies to Turnip Truck| 1 replyI got a call from a "process server" telling me to call this number or else he was going to come to my house. Should I call? What documents are they talking about?
- Alfalfa replies to NickThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - Too SmartReceived a VM from Frank Gallengher or Gallow who stated that he is calling from "county" processing and will be at my place of employment between the hours of 8-12. So I called the number left on my vm and also placed a called with my local court while this person remained on the call. This person suddenly had issues hearing me on the call and disconnected the call. I gave this number to local sheriff dept and court officials as well as recorded vm left . Stop impersonating law enforcement and court officials. Look for a number change soon.
