My Safari browser is showing that I have a virus on my computer. Says they are "apple" support and to call this number to have it removed. When I called--the person picked up the phone and said nothing. Now-I dont know how to remove this off my computer.

THEY DID NOT CALL, we called THEM. This is a number that displayed on Safari.
Like Kim above we got this Safari message on our MAC [which is supposed to be free from this kinda thing] saying they are apple support and tells you to call this number. Someone with an Asian accent did answer the call.
Note that the URL is not an Apple address. Also the caller wanted 90 dollars to sign up with Apple Care, something Apple never asks for over the phone in that way.
This message can be fixed by going to Mac System Preferences > Security & Privacy > FileVault and TURN ON THE FILE VAULT. Turning on your Firewall might help too if that is off.
You will have to restart your Mac.
The Safari message will then go away and the Safari browser will unlock when you go back into your Mac.

Today I mistakenly typed "YouTuve" in my Safari browser and I was immediately hijacked by Nexonite.   Like the others, every time I go into Safari now it locks me out of all activity (can't even close Safari with out going to Force Quit in the Apple Menu) and tells me that I have been infected with a virus and need to call Apple support at 855-582-0026.  At the top of this message is the URL:  www.nexonite.com.

I have turned on the Firewall as you have suggested.  I have rebooted the Mac but the problem is there every time I launch Safari.  I am using Firefox now to get to this forum.  Safari is unuseable.   Please help.

I would recommend this: I got my browser hijacked a couple months ago and Malwarebytes fixed the problem-only thing that did. http://malwarebytes.org is the site, but if you don't trust that link, just do a web search for 'malwarebytes' (I can totally understand you possibly not trusting the link I gave you and will not take offense if you do the second way and look it up yourself). Not sure if it works on Mac comps however-and do NOT go to the 'malwarebytesmac dot org' site-I'm seeing a low trust rating on it.

The same thing happened to me and I cannot use Safari anymore!

They did not call however I was hacked and browser was locked. Had to force quit to shut down. I called Apple support using their published number 800-275-2273. They were aware of this and other Malware that has recently been infecting both safari and chrome run on mac operating systems. The Apple service rep recommended downloading this free software, (you can donate but not required to run) http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php

Got the infection too.

Beware! I called this number, responding to their warning message (which is supposedly from Apple). However, the person, who had an Indian accent) did not treat me the way I have always been treated when dealing with Apple and I was immediately suspicious. When I told him his software "Fix" was too expensive, he just disconnected. Not something an Apple representative would EVER do. So, I called my local Mac technician, and will have her clear my hard drive of any spyware or malware. Happily, I did not voluntarily give them any of my information. My advice is this, if you receive any such warnings and you want to confirm with Apple (or any other company), just call their main number.

I believe my father got an error on his computer and called this number. Now this number is calling and harassing my 87 year old father for payment of services. They now wants to be paid by an itunes card! Want us to pay then will send an invoice. This is ridicules. Not sure he really owes the money but it is all very shady. How do I get  them to stop calling them?
