I have received a phone call several times  He says he is from Windows and the computer reports errors that he can tell me how to repair.  He says his error reports that I submitted show that a lot of malware etc are loading on my computer.  it is a lot slower than it normally is. I do not trust this.   He gave me the name of Allen Wilson at 1 855 666-6703.  Ten minutes later a caller named David called back.

Today I received a phone call from "Allan Watson": (or maybe it was Wilson as he had an accent and the name wasn't clear).  Just as the June 23 post reports, he told me he is from Windows and my computer somehow indicates it may be infected with a virus.  He asked me to turn my computer on so he could help with repair.  I found the call suspicious so I said we were eating dinner and I asked for his name and number.  He gave me the 855-666-6703 number and said I should call back and would be connected to him.  A Windows service toll free number that all link to Allan... it seems suspicious.

A Victor Carter (Indian accent) called from this number claiming to work for Windows and saying that my computer has been hacked.  He said that my computer would shut down any day and that the FBI could get involved. He urged me to buy software for $99-$250 for 1yr-7 yrs. He asked for my routing number and checking account. BEWARE this is not a legitimate service.

My computer and safety have been compromised. He was able to look ay my screen while I was on the computer and installed software.

    >> My computer and safety have been compromised. <<

Since the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
    • Disabled the anti-virus software
    • Added nasty malware to the computer
    • Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
    • Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
    • Compromised your ID
    • "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
    • Deleted some important files
    • Asked for money to repair the damage they caused

What can you do immediately after such an attack?
    1.  Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
    2.  Change ALL  passwords stored on the computer
    3.  Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
    4.  Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything
    5.  Inform your bank and credit card companies
    6.  Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
    7.  You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
    8.  Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you
    9.  Plug in the cables only AFTER all the above have been done
    10.  Change the passwords on all online accounts.  Even better - access a "safe", uninfected  computer, and chance your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.

    NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer.  Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!

Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!

Some scammers even have websites, so do NOT log into a "we will fix your computer remotely" site, and allow them access to your computer!

    Steve (MS)
My step mother called, concerned that she let someone on her computer, as they represented themselves as someone working for Microsoft/Windows. I actually do work for Microsoft, so she called me wondering.
As Slim said, honest companies don't have the time to cold call individuals and ask them for access to their computers. I'd like to say we at Microsoft are that organized and proactive. We secure computers by deploying Windows and Software updates to your computer, not by remoting in and searching around.
Would you ever let someone walk into the bank as you, to help reconcile your checkbook?
Don't be scammed. Nobody should ever ask to act as you. If you called them, and they are a trustworthy company you do business with, Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance are great tools that are available for honest people to help customers.

After calling the 855-866-6703 number, and not being able to understand the person, they had the audacity to call me back from 581-745-4127.

I too, was scammed. I had a pop up on my computer that said my computer had been hacked. I ignored the pop up and about a half hour later, I get a phone call from "Microsoft" stating the same thing about my computer. He told me the hacker was from NJ and asked me if I knew anyone in NJ. I told him I was from NJ. He then gave me the IP number and said he was going to report it to the FBI, who, in turn, would let me know who the hacker was. He asked me if I was on the computer and if not, I should go to the computer and he would show me what he meant. I did this and he asked for control of my computer, which I stupidly gave him. He then proceeded to show me all the "errors" and that he could fix it. I asked him how much it was going to cost me and he said "nothing". I then asked him where he got my phone number and he said that I was registered with Microsoft and that they have access to all that information. He said he was going to download some software that would fix the problem but he would have to work on it for awhile. I told him I couldn't stay around because I was going out. He proceeded to pitch me his spiel on the cost of the software, $149. for 1 year and I don't remember how much for more years. I told him I would take it for one year. I told him I would give him my credit card number. He said "no, credit card, we need a check". I thought that was odd and when I asked him, why no credit card, he said because my computer was hacked and it would not be a good idea. I said, "why is it such a good idea to give you my routing number and checking account number. He said the screen would go black and that it would not be evident to anyone but him. I gave him all the information and approved a check for $149.00. He told me that someone would be calling me in the morning to verify that I did indeed authorize  the check.  What a jerk I was. When I returned later that evening, I called the number he gave me. He even gave me his name as "Jackey", his ID number and asked me to create a password, telling me that if anyone called and said they were from Microsoft, I shouldn't engage them unless they gave me the password I created. When I called noone answered. I was feeling very leery about the whole situation. Firts thing that morning, I called my bank, told them what happened. They told me to go directly to the bank and transfer my funds to another account. I then called, "Jackey" and told him I couldn't give him the check because the bank froze my account because my account had been hacked. He didn't understand. I lied to him about the bank saying my account had been hacked. I wanted him to know that there was no way he was getting my money, but at the same time I didn't want to accuse him of scamming me. I did get the phone call from the third party asking me if I authorized the check. I said "no". "Jackey "called back a few hours later asking me if I got the phone call. I said that I did not. I lied again. I then told him not to give the hackers information to the FBI and that I had a neighbor who worked for the FBI and that I had given him the information. Another lie. He got very upset and told me not to do that. I said, "too late". I called Microsoft and reported the incidednt. They told me that Microsoft is not proactive and would never call ,  Ten days later, today, actually, I get a phone call from "Jackey". He called anonymously. He asked to speak to me and then identified himself. I told him he was a scammer. He denied it. I said it again and told him not to call me again. I hung up and am kicking myself for not engaging him to ask what he wanted. Lesson learned. At least I'm not out the $149.00.

    BEWARE
SCAM ALERT! Do not give computer access to any person calling in or your credit card no. I had my son cancel his credit card after being scammed and the following day his phone has been ringing continuously with this no. 1-845-210-3714 (New York number)  most likely because we cancelled his credit card so payment did not go through! Whatever they did to his laptop we now need to do a clean install to get it up and working again -  at least we worked fast to cancel credit card and no loss of money!

This company information came up on my 78 year old mothers computer. They talked her into giving them her checking account information and said she had a virus and they would clean it up for her, they told her "do not touch your mouse" . SCAM. Luckily , she went to the bank and stopped the online check information.
