    Nick
I was just doing some internet browsing and I visited a questionable website that immediately opened a new window with a pop-up stating that a website was requesting a username and password, along with a computerized voice clip telling me that my computer is infected with a virus, and how this virus compromises the security of my computer, and that I should call this phone number to help get it resolved. As a tech savvy person who does their own computer maintinance and keeps my baby running smoothly, i called this number not to get my computer 'fixed', but to ask them information about the company they work for and why they were doing such shoddy advertising practices. They continually refused to give me any information about themselves and continually interrupted me insisting my computer was infected.

I've run my own virus programs and anti-malware programs and the only thing I found and removed was their advertising program.

If you get this notification, do not call them, just get a free anti-virus/malware program off the internet to remove their crappy 'service'.

I was stupid and had this warning popped up on my system which I was locked out of.  I called the number and the tech answered said he was with Microsoft.  Wanted close to $500 for protection.  Had me install Teamviewer so he could access my computer which he did then appeared to immediately download tons of information so I cut him off and disconnected.  Closed all bank account to be sure and still locked out of my computer.  We'll see what happens.  Chalk it up to experience.

With thanks to Slim--registered user here:

Since the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
    • Disabled the anti-virus software
    • Added nasty malware to the computer
    • Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
    • Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
    • Compromised your ID
    • "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
    • Deleted some important files
    • Asked for money to repair the damage they caused

What can you do immediately after such an attack?
    1.  Pull the cables on the computer, so it cannot access the internet.
    2.  Change ALL  passwords stored on the computer
    3.  Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
    4.  Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything
    5.  Inform your bank and credit card companies
    6.  Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
    7.  You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
    8.  Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you
    9.  Plug in the cables only AFTER all the above have been done
    10.  Change the passwords on all online accounts.  Even better - access a "safe", uninfected  computer, and chance your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.

    NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer.  Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!

Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!

    Some scammers even have websites.
