How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Received a call today May 11, 2015 on this number and thanks Alfalfa after reading your comment, I did just as you said. Just FYI:They were able to provide me with the information requested. No they didn't threaten me at all, they provided me with documentation as requested about my debt. Wasn't to happy about what I owed because I owed 26 different credit cards already.. Guess you could call it hard times:) This was on my US Bank account that I owed $1,904, thanks to the bank and all there extra overdrawn charges. They did agree to a settlement for me for a lot less for me and I was able to make payments. They even sent me a letter as soon as I made my first payment and I didn't even request it. You may want to make sure when you look up Premier Investigation that you look up the one in Florida for this number because all my documents show out of Florida as well as my online bank statements. There are around 5 different Premier Investigation companies when I attempted to search for them myself all over the country.

These guys are zombie debt collectors who are trying collect on alleged debts that are beyond the Statue the of Limitations. Would recommend that you file a complaint with Office in your State that oversees debt collectors for their harassing phones. And I agree with Richard, please don't fall for the postings of the debt collector shrills that lurk on these types of site pretending to help when they're only setting people up for further harassment and problems.

    James -
How did you find this site?  I found it when I googled a phone number that was harassing me.  I think thats how most people get here.

It looks to me like you came here to sing the praises of Premier Investigation services.  Do you like the company that much?  Or do you work for them?  Are you being paid to post false good reviews on websites like this one?

Do you sleep well at night?  Does your conscience keep you awake?  Or do you not have a conscience?

And so far as I can see, the group with the 561 area code  engages in debt scamming.  The group with the 954 area code seems legit. Hard to tell sometimes.

Someone posted a complaint at (561) 531-5515 800notes about the Premier with the 954 area code.  So perhaps the 954 Premier isn't quit as legit as it appears to be.

Still not clear exactly who this 855-805-9091 really belongs to.

However, you did not post the business name and address that is on the documentation they sent you, and the letter they sent you after you made your first payment.

Why did you intentionally forget to do that?

I owed a debt to US Bank since my ex-husband over drafted my account 2 years ago for $2879.11 I have not been able to get a bank account since. They called me three months ago and offered a settlement for $652.12 which I paid and they gave me a settlement letter that I paid it off two weeks later. I just got my new bank account last week! Have no complaints here. Everything is not a scam when you know you owe the debt! Using excuses to not pay is one thing but knowing you owe is another! Just pay the bill!

***A company must be licensed in their state as well as the one they are trying to collect in if two different states are involved.

    Some Tips:
    *Keep all messages
*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
*Keep a notebook handy for writing time, date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
*Check your SOL for your state as well.
*Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.
