    Informational post:

    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

    Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I just got a call from these guys as well. 8558099516. Looking for me but not even sure they had the correct number. I have been working to clean up my credit for over a year, and have dealt with plenty collection agencies. NONE OF THEM operate like this. At the very least if they were legit they would give the name of their company (this message didn't) and a case reference number. Nothing like that was included. Such a scam. Block them.

    Was bombarded from people from a different number a few months back, even started calling family members about a payday loan I supposedly got 4 years ago, problem is the last and only payday loan I got was 8 years ago and it was paid back. But I did look into some payday loans only few years ago, that's were they must of gotten my info.
    They refused to give me any info just a bunch of idle threats of law suites. I told them great sue me and I'll see them in court, that way I can actually get some info on this. Shocking no law suite came they stopped calling, but now they have started up again.
    Moral of the story, carful what info u put online.
    DONT PAY THEM A DIME!!!!

    Called me and left a voice mail saying my husband had a "formal complaint" against him and call them back. I called back and spoke to Heather who asked for my phone number. I gave it to her and she said she was looking for ME...not my husband. Strange.... anyway she said I owed for 2 Internet payday loans from 2013. I told her I haven't taken any loan out in several years then she said it was 2010. I said nope. Didn't do any loan then either. She had my employer and address from 8 years ago, nothing current. Said if I didn't pay her I would have to go to court. She said they would serve me at my home and place of employment. I asked if she needed my current job and address to "serve" me since she had super old info (I was being a smartass) and she hung up on me. Lol! Stupid scamming low life people. They are trying to get hard working people's money and I have no problem being rude to them.

    This is a SCAM!!!! I've received about 6 calls like this in the last 6 months. A man called me last week from this phone number. I think if you've ever taken out a payday loan in your life (I did once in 2004 as a college student), then these scammers have managed to access some of your info and are trying to use it to scam money out of you.

    This guy claimed I took out a loan in December 2011 and that the check bounced, so they're filled my a complaint against me. I asked him what bank account the money went into and he said TCF bank....I then asked him for the account number. He hesitated, and then gave me the last 4 digits.

    I then explained to him that he isn't the first person to call with a similar scam and that #1: I closed my TCF bank account in 2006. And #2: I have a letter from TCF bank corporate that outlines all my banking dates and the account numbers/Debit card numbers I had with them. The account number he provides didn't match anything number associated with me. With any bank!

    I then ask that he send me all the info he has because I'd like to file a police report since someone has obviously stolen my identity. He ended the call SO fast after that. He was like, "yea I'll mail this stuff to you, and you can tell your story to the judge in Washtenaw County -Ann Arbor." I said to him..."you told me I took out this loan online and that you don't know where the company is located, why the Ann Arbor court house?" He couldn't provide an answer. He also didn't even asks for my address, which I KNOW he doesn't have.

    What was funny about the Ann Arbor connection, is that when I took out a loan back in 2004, I WAS a college student living in Ann Arbor. But I paid that loan! I have been married for several years now and haven't lived in Ann Arbor since I graduated school in 2006.

    Scam! Scam! Scam!

    I got the same call Monday. These people are pathetic. The gave me the same threat.  The guy I talked to said he filed paper work. That's his job title. Really? So I called them out and said so what do I need to pay you money so I don't go to court? He said yes we can help you settle out of court. I said I know you're a scammer. I'm recording the call and filing a complaint against you as we speak. He hung up. Losers.
