Got a call from 202-568-6917.  A person in rushed voice said "This is Jim Smith, I have been forwarded paperwork that you are probably not aware of and I need you to call me back urgently at 855-865-4437."

Jim Smith?  Nice name choice.  I hope you realize this is a fraud.

Caller said her name was Jeanine then finally said Curley after not seeming to know what her name was.  Told me to call them about some important message that was attached to my information.  What kind of information??

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Got a call from a Ma 508 number. Ignorant poor English speaking woman left rambling message yo call 855-865-4437. This is a scam......ignore it and hang up, or block the call.

I just received a call from a Boston, MA # (617)459-4175 but the women on my voicemail said to call her back at (855)865-4437. She was asking for my Husband. First of all I don't know how she got this # when both my husband and I just got brand NEW cell phone #'s not even a month ago!! AND they are in my mother's name!! So how on earth did she get my #??? Anyway she said her name was Ms. Orr and that Documents are being filed against him in their office on Friday (today is Wed) if they don't hear back from him. They also said they will not be making another call out and will just go ahead and file, and that they have options available to him. I KNOW this is a fraud!!! My husband is a disabled Vet with a traumatic brain injury, I know for a fact that he doesn't have any open cases or owes anyone any money!! He sits home all day with severe migraines an is in constant pain. These people are such [***], how can they get away with this crap??? Whatever you do please DO NOT fall for this!! They are FRAUDS!!!!!

Got a call from 651-346-3721.  A man left a message saying "My name is Jim Smith, I have been forwarded paperwork that I am concerned you are unaware of. Please call me back  at 855-865-4437."  The call was asking for my fiance but I am sure that this is a bogus call and we are not calling back.  (We just bought a house and know there is no weird outstanding collection items or anything like that for us.)  We have dealt with bogus collectors before, and visit http://www.pacer.gov/ to check our names to see if there are any kind of "cases" with our names on it like some collectors will say; there has never been anything yet.

Some clown called spoofing a number associated with a local Geico agency and left me a similar message.  I already reported the number to my state attorney generals office and they are investigating.  They left too much information on the phone message to be legit and never sent a dunning letter.  This is a TOTAL scam.  Do not pay this group a cent..

I was told it is "imperative" that I call this person back at 855-865-4437, but she didn't even know the phone number and stumbled over it repeatedly whilst trying to repeat it.

I just received a call from a local Houston number (which is actually a local car audio installation business that apparently just recently went out of business). The woman left a message that she has important paperwork with my name and social security information on and to call her back at the 855-856-4437 number. I never answer any phone numbers I do not recognize on my phone, and after reading the above posts, I have added this to my blocked number list on my cell and deleted the voicemail. Looking back over my phone log, I see the same local number tried to call a few days ago as well, but left no voicemail that time. I have no debts with anyone so I know this is not legit.

I too have been getting calls from them.  They make it sound like you are being served court paperwork.  I asked for a copy of the original debt (they will try to send you a letter on a collection company letterhead with no evidence of a debtor owed).  They mask their 800# with a local area code so we will pick up.   Nothing is on my credit report and I get about one call every six months from them.

I got a call from a Casey, saying she has a new file on her desk about me and needing to get a final statement. They keep using my maiden name, I have been married for 5 years now, if this was real they would have known that.

received a call on my cell today it came up as a local area code so in the hopes that I would pick up, It was from a Mrs. Smith who received a file with my name on it and that I need to call 855-865-4437 to address the matter. Well these are scams, definitely will not be calling them!!!!

Yes they just called me from a 714 area code and said hey this is Jim Smith we have been trying to contact you for our client and yiu need to call us back at 8558654437... lol

I just got a call from 630 area code.  "Nathan Ross" stated "they have been trying to get a hold of me for their client in an important matter." I wonder what they'd say if I told them I work for the Sheriff's Dept and was well aware of their scam?
