    I am also getting calls.  I assume that no one has had them actually show up?  The person calling me is claiming that they are Larry Dove, a person courier, and that they have a document at their office that they need to drop off to me no later than today and that they will be stopping by where I work and if they can't find me at work, they will be coming to my home.  If they can't find me, they will have to send it back as a refusal.

    i would not hold my breath, this is a scare tactic that these collection agencies use, to try to trick you into paying your debt. Nobody will ever show up. They probably are calling you from your area code...Right?  They use a system that allows them to make it look like they’re in your area. This is supposed to scare you into calling them. I found all this information out from a friend who helped when my debt was in collections. He is has helped a lot of people, if your interested?

    I have received 2 phone calls from 215-660-3072 telling me that a courier was coming to my house tomorrow and I needed ID and witness to sign some papers.  I didn't answer first call which said it was from AAPA and I could call 855-875-2511 and refer to the file number he left (his name was Mutt Mason.)

    Second phone call was next AM.  I told him person he was asking for would not be home and that this surely sounded like a scam and that I was going to report it.   He did not show up at 3PM as he threatend to.

    Government Actions

    NYS Attorney General vs Argos Alliance Group, LLC
    Date of Action: 6/21/2012

    The NYS Attorney General reached a settlement with John Chebat, who operates several debt collection businesses in the Buffalo area, including Western New York Capital, Inc.; International Asset Group, LLC; Unified Asset Solutions, LLC; Outsourced Legal Prep, LLC; Argos Alliance Group, LLC; and Check Systems Recovery, LLC.

    The Attorney General's office entered into an agreement with Chebat requiring him to pay $175,000 in penalties and change his debt collection practices. The investigation concluded that Chebat collectors:

    Illegally contacted the employers of consumers.
    Illegally sent verification of employment forms to employers demanding information to which they were not entitled to. For example, they demanded social security numbers of consumers.
    Illegally sending letters to consumers on the letterhead of a local attorney.
    Falsely representing to consumers that, if they did not settle a debt, their case would be referred to a "nationwide network of attorneys" or in-house counsel.
    Engaged in Caller ID spoofing, the practice of causing a fictitious local number to be displayed consumer's Caller ID display, including local court phone numbers.
    Falsely represented to consumers that they were process servers and were about to serve consumers with legal process.
    Falsely represented to consumers that if they did not settle the debt, Chebat would pursue them "according to [the consumer's] Bad Check Laws"
    Falsely implied to consumers that they had taken civil judgments when they had not.

    In addition to paying $175,000, Chebat must (i) install a system that permits him to monitor the calls of his collectors without their knowledge, (ii) monitor his collectors on a regular basis to ensure that they are complying the law, (iii) bar his employees from engaging in spoofing and representing that they are process servers, and (iv) appoint a compliance officer responsible for ensuring that Chebat's collectors comply with the law.

    I received a call today on my cell from a local number.  I didn't answer and let it go to voice mail.  The guy stated his name was Michael Mason and that he had come to be in possession of some sealed documents that required my signature.  He said that I needed to have a valid id, & a witness to sign as well.  He said he would try my residence and then my place of employment where he would need a signature from my supervisor.  He said if I had any questions to call 855-875-2511 and refer to a file number to reach the filing party prior to his arrival.  He told me to consider myself properly served!  I thought it sounded awful weird.  Now that I am reading other posts, I am going to ignore the call and report it only if it becomes harassing.  It looks as though this has been going on for quite some time now.  My question is, why hasn't someone stopped them?

    I have received numerous calls from 855875805 for an old debt my son owed. Now these people are calling my landlord and even called my landlords mother. My so is not on my lease and does not even live here. They make threats of having court papers and even said the police were coming here or to my sons job to arrest him. Is this legal? They are calling me dozens of times a day. This isnt even my debt its my sons so why keep harrassing me?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
