Called and asked for HR or the person who does employment verification. They wouldn't let me take a message and said they would call back when she was in the office.

Caller is from a company, which follows up on job references.  If someone put you down as a reference for a job application, this company could contact you for feedback.

This was legit. They were calling to verify employment of one of my employees. I was expecting the call.

This is a background screening company. If you receive a call from them they are contacting you due to: someone putting you down as a reference for a job/college application or scholarship background check/verifying their employment at your company/or verifying their attendance to your school. It's a legitimate company and most of them are pretty nice agents. Clients hire them to do the background checks for hiring them, creditors for them applying for a loan, or colleges accepting them into their program. They aren't trying to sell anything and they're looking to have a quick interaction to get their job done just like the rest of us. It's a somewhat well known company but they work for other companies as a third party. Kinda like how a temp service hires for other companies, same concept.

They called me twice at 1:00 am in the morning. Doubt if this is a legit number or company.
