- Think Tank| 1 replyThis is a bottom feeder junk debt buyer called GC Services. I was working with a lawyer to file a complaint against them. I owe them nothing and they keep asking for the wrong person and have asked them numerous times to stop calling my cell at all hours of the day. Just when I file the complaint they stop for a few weeks and call from a different number. Shady as hell.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office. - anon replies to Educated ConsumerIt is a violation of the FDCPA for debt collectors to harass an alleged debtor at work (they must stop calling immediately they are told to stop), as well as harassing friends, relatives, acquaintances and neighbors. THAT IS ILLEGAL. Also per the FDCPA, no one should pay any caller who refuses to mail a letter showing that they owe this debt to the caller. Refusal to mail this within five days of their first contact with the alleged debtor is another violation of federal law!
- Hate Debt Collectors because they LIE replies to JennSir, if plan to give "legal advice" I suggest you get it RIGHT. You are INCORRECT. A regular debt can stay on a persons credit record for seven (7) years and can "drops off". A court judgment for (10) years and can be renewed only via another court order. WHERE YOU ARE GIVING FALSE INFORMATION, is that the original creditor does NOT HAVE SEVEN YEARS TO SUE. They have the statutory limit for filing and service according to EACH STATE the debt is INCURRED IN. And since A DEBT IS A CONTRACT. The Law of CONTRACTS applies. Usually a creditor only has ONE YEAR to take legal action, one year to serve. I suggest you GET YOUR LEGAL FACTS STRAIGHT before professing to be an attorney which I AM. A debtor should seek legal counsel in his own jurisdiction and not listen to ANY CREDIT collectors. A debtor should learn his rights under the FEDERAL and FAIR CREDIT REPORTING statues of his own state!!!

- Crazy horse Paris France replies to For real...Most debt collectors call from a toll free number, and they will leave a message and not hang up. They are all from other countries claiming that you money. I don't get calls but I get emails but when I ask them to send me some proof of what it is, they don't reply back but tell them you're going to make a payment and they suddenly know how to pick up phone and actually talk to you. They claim you owe but they want to verify your address to make sure you are still there. If you were actually owing any kind of debt, they would have your current address, phone and email, and you probably would have gotten a legal notice in the mail or served to you via a Sheriff.
